Nottingham Forest has sacked manager Ange Postecoglou after just eight games in charge. The decision comes on the heels of a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea at home on Saturday. Postecoglou, who was appointed on September 9th as a replacement for Nuno Espirito Santo, failed to secure a single victory during his brief tenure.
The club released a statement on social media, confirming the immediate termination of Postecoglou's contract due to a string of disappointing results and performances. They stated that they would not be making any further comments.
Postecoglou's short reign saw Forest lose six matches and draw two. The team's performance in the league suffered significantly, with only one goal scored in the last five games, leaving them dangerously close to the relegation zone.
The swift decision to sack Postecoglou was foreshadowed by owner Evangelos Marinakis's early departure from his seat during the Chelsea game, according to TNT pundit Peter Crouch. "I think the decision was made as soon as he [the chairman] left his seat," Crouch said.
Prior to his appointment at Nottingham Forest, Postecoglou had a stint with Tottenham Hotspur, where he led the team to a Europa League title, ending a 17-year trophy drought for the club. Despite this achievement, he was dismissed from his position at Tottenham. Before his time in the Premier League, Postecoglou had successful spells at other clubs, where he consistently delivered trophies.
Just a day before his sacking, Postecoglou defended his position, urging for patience and highlighting his track record of success at previous clubs. He acknowledged the pressure but differentiated it from calls for his dismissal after only five weeks. "There's a difference between pressure and saying that somebody should lose their job after five weeks," he stated. He also mentioned the disruption to his personal life, saying, "I only just found an apartment to move into, which may be a bad decision on my behalf. I should have stayed in temporary digs. That's how early it is".
Possible replacements for Postecoglou are already being discussed, with Sean Dyche's name among those mentioned.
