Amorim supports Fernandes remaining Manchester United's penalty taker despite recent missed spot kicks.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has publicly backed Bruno Fernandes to remain the club's primary penalty taker, despite recent misses from the spot. Fernandes, who has missed two of the three penalties awarded to Manchester United this season, received a vote of confidence from his manager ahead of their match against Liverpool.

Fernandes missed a penalty in the 1-1 draw against Fulham and another in the 3-1 defeat to Brentford. However, he successfully converted a penalty in the 3-2 victory over Burnley. In the Carabao Cup, he scored both of his penalties in the shootout against Grimsby Town.

Amorim addressed the situation, stating, "Yes, he's the main taker". He further elaborated on Fernandes's impressive record, "I think he has 70 penalties and he misses nine – two with me". Amorim jokingly expressed his annoyance at the missed penalties but conveyed his confidence in the Portuguese midfielder. "I'm really annoyed with that," Amorim said. "But he's really confident. He's training [to take] the penalties, trying to understand that people are watching the way he [tries to] score penalties. So he will be ready".

Fernandes's overall penalty record for Manchester United is strong, with 23 successful conversions out of 29 attempts in the Premier League. He holds the record for the most penalties scored for the club in the league's history. Amorim emphasized that Fernandes is aware of the scrutiny surrounding his penalty-taking technique and is actively working to adapt. He also mentioned that there are other players in the squad who are capable of taking penalties if needed. "We have more guys also to score a penalty if he needs," Amorim said. "[But] he's the main taker. He scores a lot of goals, penalty is passing this moment. We have other options".

Amorim also dismissed concerns about Manchester United's poor record at Anfield, where they have only won once in the Premier League in the last decade. He suggested that many of his players might not even be aware of the statistic and that he prefers to focus on the present. "Football players nowadays don't watch many games, unfortunately," he said. "I have so many things to use [as inspiration] with our players. Like winning back-to-back games [in the league for the first time]. We have so much to win if we perform and win the next game. I don't need to use those games in the past". He acknowledged the intense atmosphere at Anfield but expressed confidence in his team's ability to handle it. "The environment is going to be loud but we are ready to play in that," Amorim said. "If you look at last year, sometimes we play better in that kind of environment than the pressure at home. We never know what is going to happen. We showed last year there, we can handle it. The way we start the game is more important than the environment. To do a really good warm-up. To have a feeling. To understand that it's going to be tough in the first moments. I know they are ready".
