John Tavares Scores 500th Point: A Milestone Achievement with the Toronto Maple Leafs Hockey Club.

Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares achieved a significant milestone on Saturday, October 18, 2025, recording his 500th point with the franchise. The veteran forward reached the landmark during the game against the Seattle Kraken, scoring his second goal of the contest in the third period. This goal tied the game at 3 and marked Tavares' third of the season.

Tavares, who is currently playing alongside Matias Maccelli and William Nylander on Toronto's second line, has been a consistent offensive contributor for the Maple Leafs. As he approaches his 1,200th NHL game, he continues to demonstrate that he is not slowing down.

With his two goals against the Kraken, Tavares is also nearing another milestone: 500 career goals. He is now just three goals shy of reaching that mark.

The 35-year-old Tavares is now one of only four players in NHL history to record 500 or more points with two different franchises. He joins Wayne Gretzky (Oilers and Kings), Mark Messier (Oilers and Rangers) and Marcel Dionne (Kings and Red Wings) in this exclusive club. Tavares previously recorded over 500 points with the New York Islanders, who drafted him first overall in 2009. He played nine seasons with the Islanders, serving as their captain for five years.

Tavares joined the Maple Leafs as a free agent on Canada Day in 2018, signing a seven-year deal worth $11 million annually. In June 2025, he signed a four-year contract extension with the Maple Leafs, worth an average of $4.38 million per season. He also served as the captain of the Maple Leafs from 2019 through 2024.

Last season, 2024-25, Tavares recorded 38 goals and 74 points in 75 games. His 38 goals were second-most on the team, and his 74 points were fourth-most. In the 2025 playoffs, Tavares posted five goals and two assists in 13 games as the Maple Leafs defeated the Ottawa Senators in six games before falling to the Florida Panthers in seven games in the second round.

Throughout his NHL career, Tavares has consistently demonstrated his offensive talent and leadership qualities. Before joining the NHL, he played in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for the Oshawa Generals and London Knights. Tavares was granted "exceptional player" status at the age of 14, allowing him to enter the OHL a year early. He was named the Canadian Hockey League (CHL) Rookie of the Year in 2006 and CHL Player of the Year in 2007.

As a Maple Leaf, Tavares currently sits 16th on the team's all-time points list. With a strong season, he could potentially pass Ted Kennedy for 12th place. It’s possible that Tavares will be remembered more for his time with the Maple Leafs than his time with the Islanders.
