Nathan MacKinnon scored two goals, leading the Colorado Avalanche to a 4-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Saturday. The Avalanche extended their winning streak to three games and improved their record to 5-0-1.
The Bruins opened the scoring at 3:11 of the first period when John Beecher scored from the left circle. However, MacKinnon quickly responded for the Avalanche, tying the game at 7:08 with a backhand shot past Jeremy Swayman after intercepting a Bruins pass. Josh Manson then gave the Avalanche a 2-1 lead at 10:22, scoring on a one-timer from the point after a faceoff win. Brent Burns recorded the primary assist on Manson's goal, becoming the oldest player in franchise history to record a four-game point streak.
The second period was scoreless, with the Avalanche dominating play but failing to capitalize on three power-play opportunities. The Bruins' penalty kill was relentless, keeping them in the game.
MacKinnon extended the Avalanche's lead to 3-1 at 4:14 of the third period with a one-timer from the right circle, assisted by Artturi Lehkonen. Martin Necas sealed the victory with an empty-net goal at 17:23, making the final score 4-1.
Scott Wedgewood stopped 11 of 12 shots for the Avalanche. Jeremy Swayman made 35 saves for the Bruins, despite the loss.
Avalanche coach Jared Bednar praised MacKinnon's performance, noting his speed and skill were key to the win. "He was feeling it tonight," Bednar said. "When he's going like that, he's tough to stop".
The Bruins, coming off a loss to the Vegas Golden Knights, struggled to generate offense, particularly at even strength. They managed just 0.16 expected goals during five-on-five play in the first period, compared to the Avalanche's 0.54.
The Avalanche will travel to Utah to face the Mammoth on Tuesday.
