Everton manager David Moyes has thrown his weight behind James Garner, suggesting the midfielder is playing himself into contention for a call-up to the England national team. The 24-year-old has been a consistent presence for the Toffees, since his arrival from Manchester United in 2022.
Garner's versatility has been a key asset for Everton. He has been deployed in various positions, including filling in at both full-back roles. However, with the defense now more settled, he has returned to his preferred midfield role, where his performances have particularly caught the eye of David Moyes.
Moyes acknowledged Garner's impressive form following Everton's recent 2-0 victory over Fulham, where goals from Idrissa Gueye and Michael Keane secured the win. When asked about Garner's potential for international recognition, Moyes stated, "I like him a lot and think he's a really good player and he must be in a group of English midfield players who are doing well". He also noted Alex Scott's recent call-up to the England squad and implied that Garner's current form should put him in a similar conversation.
Garner himself has spoken about his ambition to represent England. "I think that's every English boy's dream - to play for the national team," he said in October. While acknowledging the competition for places, he expressed his belief that he has had a strong start to the season and that earning a place in the England squad is his goal.
Garner's versatility could be a significant advantage in his quest for an England call-up. He has experience playing in multiple positions for Everton, demonstrating his adaptability and willingness to contribute wherever needed. "I am very versatile," Garner stated. "I can play pretty much every single position - I have played pretty much every single position for this club apart from striker and centre-back!".
Prior to joining Everton, Garner was a highly-rated youth prospect at Manchester United. He also has experience representing England at various youth levels, including being part of the squad that won the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship.
Despite Moyes' praise and Garner's ambitions, it remains to be seen whether he can break into Thomas Tuchel's England squad. The competition for midfield places is fierce, with several established players and emerging talents vying for selection. Garner will need to maintain his current form and continue to impress for Everton to stake his claim for a place in the national team.
According to reports from earlier this year, Garner's current contract with Everton is set to expire in June 2026.
