BCCI Releases Latest Medical Update on Shubman Gill, His Travel Plans for Guwahati: ‘Responding Well to Treatment’
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued an update regarding the health of India's captain, Shubman Gill, who suffered a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa in Kolkata. The BCCI confirmed today that Gill is responding well to medical treatment and will travel with the team to Guwahati on November 19, 2025.
Gill sustained the injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test and was immediately taken to the hospital for examination. He was kept under observation overnight and discharged the following day.
According to the BCCI statement, the 26-year-old will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team. A final decision regarding his participation in the second Test, which begins on Saturday, November 22 at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati, will be made in due course.
India dearly missed their captain in Kolkata, especially in the second innings, when they failed to chase 124 and collapsed for 93, handing South Africa a 30-run win and a 1-0 lead. Even in the first innings, Gill had managed only 4 before retiring hurt on Day 2. He was later taken out of the stadium in an ambulance and admitted to a hospital in Kolkata. Thankfully, Gill has since been discharged, but he has not resumed any form of practice yet.
Gill's injury adds to India's woes after their defeat in Kolkata, marking South Africa's first Test victory in India since 2010. Following this result, South Africa has risen to the second spot in the ICC World Test Championship standings, while India has dropped to fourth place.
In Gill's absence, Vice-captain Rishabh Pant is expected to lead the team.
Gill has been consistently playing in all three formats of the game. Before the South Africa series, Gill played in the England series from June to August, was named vice-captain for the Asia Cup in the UAE, led the team in the West Indies series, and participated in the white-ball tour to Australia, consisting of 3 ODIs and 5 T20Is, which started on October 19 and ended on November 8.
Following the Test series, India and South Africa are scheduled to play three one-day internationals and five T20 internationals between November 30 and December 19.
