Singaporean Minister's Regret: Apology Issued After Derogatory Remarks Regarding Hong Kong's Football Team

Singapore's Minister for Culture, Community and Youth, David Neo, has issued an apology following derogatory remarks he made about Hong Kong's football team and its fans. The incident occurred after a key Asian Cup match between Hong Kong and Singapore.

A video circulating online captured David Neo referring to the Hong Kong team and their supporters as "idiots". The remarks sparked outrage among Hong Kong fans and drew criticism from various quarters.

In response to the backlash, Minister Neo released a statement expressing his regret. "I sincerely apologise for my inappropriate comments," the statement read. "My words were insensitive and do not reflect the respect I have for the Hong Kong football team, its fans, and the people of Hong Kong".

The apology comes in the wake of Singapore's 2-1 victory over Hong Kong in the Asian Cup qualifier at Kai Tak Sports Park on Tuesday. The win secured Singapore's place in the Asian Cup for the first time since 1984. Despite leading at halftime, Hong Kong conceded two goals in the second half, resulting in a defeat that ended their hopes of reaching the Asian Cup finals.

Ashley Westwood, Hong Kong's head coach, acknowledged the devastating result but stated that he would not apologize for his team's effort. "No, if you give everything there is nothing to apologize for," Westwood asserted. He defended his players' performance and their commitment to improving.

The Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA), established in 1909, is the governing body for football in the city. It organizes various competitions and oversees the Hong Kong representative team.

The incident involving Minister Neo's remarks has highlighted the intense emotions surrounding sports rivalries and the importance of maintaining respectful discourse, even in moments of excitement or disappointment. His apology aims to address the offense caused and reaffirm the strong relationship between Singapore and Hong Kong.
