The New York Rangers are facing a critical offseason after missing the playoffs in 2025, prompting General Manager Chris Drury to consider significant roster changes. Several key players are at the center of trade rumors and free agency speculation, including Mika Zibanejad, Vladislav Gavrikov, and Alexis Lafreniere.

Mika Zibanejad's future with the Rangers has been the subject of much debate. Following the trade of Chris Kreider to the Anaheim Ducks, speculation arose about Zibanejad's potential departure. However, his wife, Irma, has refuted these rumors, stating that they have just settled into a new home in New York, seemingly confirming his commitment to the team. Despite this, some reports suggest that Zibanejad and the Rangers might have mutually agreed that "moving on would be best." While trading Zibanejad won't be easy because he has five years left on his contract, a complete no-move clause for the next four years, and a final year with a modified no-trade clause, it is not impossible. The Toronto Maple Leafs have emerged as a potential suitor, with a proposed trade involving Max Domi heading to the Rangers.

Vladislav Gavrikov is a highly sought-after defenseman who is set to become an unrestricted free agent. The Rangers are reportedly among the frontrunners for his services, aiming to bolster their blue line. Arthur Staple of The Athletic mentioned that the Rangers are keeping an eye on Gavrikov as a potential option if they can free up cap space. Gavrikov, 29, is coming off a strong season with the Los Angeles Kings, where he recorded 30 points and a plus-26 rating. He is likely seeking a short-term deal worth around $7.5-8 million annually. The Kings and Rangers might combine for an offseason trade involving Gavrikov, if he's not signed before free agency.

Alexis Lafreniere's situation is also generating considerable buzz. Despite entering the first year of a seven-year, $52.15 million contract, Lafreniere's name has surfaced in trade discussions. Larry Brooks of the New York Post reported that Drury discussed Lafreniere with several teams at the NHL Combine. The Rangers are exploring ways to increase their cap flexibility, and trading Lafreniere, who carries a $7.45 million cap hit, would provide significant relief. While Lafreniere has shown flashes of his potential, his consistency has been a concern, with a dip in performance after signing his extension. Several teams may be interested in acquiring the former first-overall pick.
