David Coote, the former Premier League referee who was sacked last December, has been formally charged by the Football Association (FA) regarding disparaging comments he made about former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. The charges stem from a video that surfaced on social media in November 2024, in which Coote is allegedly heard making derogatory remarks about Klopp and Liverpool Football Club.
The video, which was reportedly recorded in July 2020, shows Coote using expletives to describe Klopp and referring to Liverpool as "s**t". The emergence of the video led to Coote's immediate suspension by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the body responsible for overseeing referees in English football. Following an internal investigation, the PGMOL terminated Coote's employment, deeming his position "untenable."
The FA has now launched its own investigation into the matter, resulting in a formal charge against Coote for breaching FA Rule E3. The FA alleges that Coote acted in an "improper manner" and used "abusive and/or insulting words" in violation of Rule E3.1. Furthermore, the FA asserts that Coote's actions constitute an "Aggravated Breach" under FA Rule E3.2, as his comments included a reference, whether express or implied, to nationality. This refers to the fact that Klopp is German.
Rule E3 of the FA's regulations deals with misconduct that brings the game into disrepute, encompassing the use of insulting language or behavior, as well as actions that undermine the integrity of match officials.
In addition to the FA charge, Coote has faced other allegations and investigations. In November 2024, the FA investigated claims that Coote had discussed potentially booking a player with a friend the day before a match. However, the FA has stated that "no charges have been issued in relation to allegations of gambling misconduct against David Coote, which were also fully investigated."
Moreover, separate allegations surfaced that Coote was involved with illicit substances. The Sun published a video purportedly showing Coote snorting a white powder while working at Euro 2024. Following these incidents, UEFA banned Coote from any UEFA refereeing activity until June 2026.
Coote has publicly apologized for his actions. He admitted that he was "not sober" during the rant against Klopp and attributed his behavior to struggles with his sexuality and the pressures associated with being an elite referee, stating that he used cocaine as an "escape route." He has also claimed to have since overcome his drug habit. He also came out as gay following the incidents.
