Gianluigi Donnarumma's tenure at Paris Saint-Germain has come to an abrupt end, with the Italian goalkeeper announcing his departure from the club. The announcement follows his exclusion from the squad for the UEFA Super Cup against Tottenham and the recent signing of Lucas Chevalier from Lille. Donnarumma, who played a key role in PSG's Champions League victory last season, expressed his disappointment in a message to fans, stating that "someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group".

PSG manager Luis Enrique has taken responsibility for the decision, citing the need for a "different profile of goalkeeper". While acknowledging Donnarumma's qualities, Enrique suggested that Chevalier's superior passing ability was a crucial factor in the decision. "These are always difficult decisions to make," Enrique said. "I can only say very good things about Gianluigi Donnarumma, he is one of the best players in his position...But we are looking for a different profile of goalkeeper".

Donnarumma's statement, posted on his Instagram account, conveyed a sense of being forced out of the club. "Unfortunately, someone has decided that I can no longer be part of the group and contribute to the team's success," he wrote. He thanked the fans for their support and expressed hope for an opportunity to say goodbye properly. "I hope to have the opportunity to look the fans at the Parc des Princes in the eyes one more time and say goodbye as it should be done," Donnarumma stated.

The news has sparked interest from several top clubs, with Manchester City and Manchester United emerging as potential destinations. L'Equipe reports that Donnarumma has already agreed to personal terms with Manchester City. City's interest is contingent on the potential departure of Ederson, who has been linked with a move to Galatasaray. Manchester United have also been linked with Donnarumma, but recent reports suggest that a goalkeeper is not currently a priority for the club. PSG are reportedly seeking around £43 million (€50 million) for Donnarumma, although some reports suggest they would accept a lower fee to avoid losing him for free next summer when his contract expires.

The situation has drawn criticism, with Italian goalkeeping legend Dino Zoff expressing surprise at PSG's decision. Zoff highlighted Donnarumma's significant contribution to PSG's Champions League victory and questioned the reasoning behind his departure. "From what I've seen, he won the Champions League with a notable contribution," Zoff said. "I do not understand what could have happened, especially since his contribution was first-rate".

Donnarumma's departure marks the end of a relatively short but eventful chapter in his career. Signed from AC Milan with high expectations, he helped PSG secure their first Champions League title. However, disagreements over a new contract and the arrival of Lucas Chevalier have led to his exit. As he seeks a new club, the 26-year-old goalkeeper is expected to attract considerable interest from top teams across Europe.
