India faces England in first test: Can they conquer despite key player absences?

The India-England Test series is set to begin on June 20, 2025, at Headingley, Leeds, marking the start of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle for both teams. However, this series marks a significant transition for the Indian team, with the absence of stalwarts like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin, who have all retired from Test cricket. This leaves a massive void in skills and experience, placing considerable responsibility on the shoulders of the new captain, Shubman Gill, and his deputy, Rishabh Pant.

India's squad reflects a blend of youth and experience. The batting lineup includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, and Karun Nair, alongside captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant. With the likes of Kohli and Sharma gone, the onus is on Gill to lead from the front and solidify his position as a key batter. The team also sees the return of Karun Nair, who is set to play his first Test in eight years, adding a seasoned campaigner to the mix. Sai Sudharsan, who has impressed with his white-ball abilities, is also in contention for a debut. The bowling attack will be spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Siraj, with support from Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna.

One of the key questions is how India will fill the batting spots left vacant by Kohli and Sharma. Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair are the leading contenders. Sudharsan, despite lacking a strong first-class record, has impressed with his fearless batting, while Nair brings a wealth of experience and a prolific run-scoring record in domestic cricket. The decision on who bats at No. 3 and No. 6 will be crucial in determining the team's balance and strength. KL Rahul, the senior-most batter in the squad, will also need to step up and provide stability to the batting order.

England, led by Ben Stokes, have already announced their playing XI for the first Test. The batting lineup features Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and Joe Root, forming a solid top order. Harry Brook, Stokes, and Jamie Smith will complete the middle order. The bowling attack includes Chris Woakes, who returns to the team after an ankle injury, along with Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, and Shoaib Bashir, the lone spinner. England's top order is in excellent form, with Crawley, Duckett, and Pope all having scored centuries in their last Test outing against Zimbabwe.

The conditions at Headingley are expected to favor batters initially, but as the match progresses, spinners are likely to come into play. If the weather is overcast, pacers could extract sharp movement, making it a balanced track. The pitch is expected to allow for a full five-day game, with first-innings scores around 300. The weather forecast suggests sunny and warm conditions for the first three days, with a slight chance of rain on the final two days.

This series is not just about individual performances; it's about India's ability to adapt and thrive in the absence of their key players. Shubman Gill's captaincy will be under scrutiny, and his leadership will be crucial in guiding a relatively young team through challenging conditions. For England, it's an opportunity to assert their dominance at home and set the tone for the rest of the series. As both teams embark on their WTC 2025-27 journey, the first Test at Headingley promises to be a thrilling contest, full of new faces, fresh strategies, and high stakes.
