In a thrilling encounter at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, Mexico secured its 10th CONCACAF Gold Cup title, defeating the United States 2-1. Edson Álvarez's decisive goal in the 77th minute propelled Mexico to victory in a match filled with drama and excitement.

The final, played on July 6, 2025, in front of a sold-out crowd of 70,925, saw the United States take an early lead. Chris Richards headed in a Sebastian Berhalter free kick in the fourth minute, marking his second goal of the tournament in similar fashion. However, Mexico responded in the 27th minute when Raúl Jiménez scored his third goal of the Gold Cup, leveling the score.

The game remained tied until the 77th minute when Álvarez scored the tiebreaking goal. Johan Vásquez flicked a free kick across the goal mouth, and Álvarez redirected the ball from close range just inside the far post. Initially ruled offside, the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) overturned the call, confirming the goal and giving Mexico the lead.

Despite a late chance for the U.S. by Patrick Agyemang in stoppage time, Mexican goalkeeper Luis Malagón blocked the shot, securing the win for Mexico. Mexico's victory marked their record 10th Gold Cup title and solidified their dominance in the CONCACAF region. They also defended their title from 2023 and improved to 6-2 in Gold Cup finals against the United States.

Throughout the match, Mexico dominated possession with 60% and had 12 corner kicks compared to none for the United States. Álvarez's performance throughout the tournament earned him the Golden Ball Award for best player. Additionally, Luis Malagón won the Golden Glove Award for best goalkeeper, having conceded only three goals in the tournament. Ismael Diaz of Panama secured the Golden Boot Award for scoring the most goals (six). The USMNT received the Fair Play Award, which is given to the most disciplined team in the tournament.

This game was the last competitive match for both the U.S. and Mexico before they co-host the 2026 World Cup with Canada. The U.S. team, missing several key players due to vacation, injuries, and club commitments, used the tournament to evaluate potential future starters. Players like Diego Luna and Patrick Agyemang emerged as contenders for World Cup roster spots.

The victory was especially sweet for Mexico, with the largely pro-Mexico crowd making their presence felt throughout the match. This win marks another chapter in the storied rivalry between these two North American soccer powerhouses.
