Max Pšenička's journey to the Utah Mammoth is a story of a young hockey player's unwavering determination and the sacrifices made by his family to help him achieve his dream of playing in the NHL. Pšenička, an 18-year-old defenseman, was drafted 46th overall by the Utah Mammoth in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft.

Before January 2025, Pšenička's life was centered in Czechia. He was born in Prague and honed his skills within the HC Slavia Praha's youth system before progressing to HC Plzeň, where he played in both the U20 league and the Czech Extraliga, the top professional league in the country. In the U20 league, he recorded 11 points in 20 games, showcasing his offensive capabilities alongside a strong defensive game. "I started playing in men's league back in Czechia,” Pšenička said. “That was really good progress for me from the previous season. I was really excited how the season went for me."

A pivotal moment arrived when his rights were traded from the Kelowna Rockets to the Portland Winterhawks of the Western Hockey League (WHL). This prompted a life-altering decision: leave his home, family, and familiar surroundings in Czechia to pursue a better chance of being drafted into the NHL. This gamble paid off, with the Utah Mammoth selecting him in the second round.

Pšenička's father played a significant role in his hockey development, ensuring he made it to every practice, regardless of the hour. His parents invested all they could to give Max the best possible chance to succeed in hockey.

Pšenička joined the Portland Winterhawks in January 2025 and quickly adapted to the North American style of play. In 24 regular-season games, he tallied one goal and six assists. His contributions extended beyond point production, as he became a reliable defensive presence, utilizing his 6-foot-5 frame and reach to disrupt plays. Winterhawks coach Kyle Gustafson utilized him on the penalty kill and, at times, on the power play. In the 2025 WHL Playoffs, Pšenička elevated his game, increasing his average ice time and surpassing his regular-season point total with eight points in 18 games.

Pšenička credits his smooth transition to North America to the welcoming environment within the Winterhawks organization. "I think one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life (coming to North America), because Portland, for me, was the best organization I've ever been to yet,” Pšenička said. He also expressed gratitude to his billet family for their support during his time in Portland.

Looking ahead, Pšenička aims to improve his offensive game and become a more complete two-way defenseman. "For me, the past season was really like defensive... so I want to focus more on offensive play style of the game you know more two-way D being in uh on on the ice,” Pšenička said.

When asked what he wants Utah fans to know about him, Pšenička responded, "Just a really happy kid you know being kind to everybody uh really good at tennis." He also mentioned his newfound interest in golf, though he admits he needs to improve his skills.

Max Pšenička's journey from Czechia to the Utah Mammoth exemplifies his dedication and the sacrifices he and his family made to pursue his hockey aspirations. With his size, defensive acumen, and commitment to improvement, Pšenička has the potential to become a valuable asset to the Utah Mammoth.
