Atlético Madrid has made a significant move in the transfer market by securing the services of Almeria full-back Marc Pubill. The deal, finalized on Tuesday, came as a surprise to many, as Pubill was heavily linked with a move to Premier League side Wolves. Meanwhile, Athletic Bilbao has successfully brought back Jesús Areso from Osasuna, strengthening their right-back position.

Marc Pubill to Atlético Madrid

Atlético Madrid's acquisition of Marc Pubill addresses their need for a young and dynamic right-back. The 22-year-old, a Spanish U21 international, has caught the eye with his performances for Almeria, where he played 63 games, scoring two goals and providing eight assists. Pubill's qualities as a modern full-back, combined with his international experience, make him a valuable addition to Diego Simeone's squad.

The transfer fee for Pubill is reported to be around €16 million, with an additional €4 million in potential bonuses. Almeria will also retain a 15% sell-on fee, indicating their belief in the player's future potential. Atlético Madrid officially confirmed the signing, pending a medical examination and the finalization of his contract.

Pubill's journey to Atlético Madrid has been eventful. Before joining Almeria in 2023, he was a highly-rated prospect at Levante, making his first-team debut in December 2021. He also attracted interest from other clubs, including AC Milan, Juventus, Roma, and Atalanta. However, Atlético Madrid moved swiftly to secure his signature, beating off competition from Wolves and other potential suitors.

Notably, Pubill was part of the Spanish team that won the gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He also played in the recent U21 European Championship, scoring a goal against Slovakia. With the arrival of Pubill, Atlético Madrid now boasts both the starting right-back of the Spain U21 national team and the starting left-back of the Italy U21 side, Matteo Ruggeri. The club also has three Olympic champions in their ranks: Álex Baena, Pablo Barrios, and Marc Pubill.

Jesús Areso Returns to Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao has re-signed Jesús Areso from Osasuna, bringing the right-back back to his former club. The 26-year-old has signed a contract until June 30, 2031. The transfer fee is reported to be €12 million.

Areso began his youth career at Aluvión and joined Athletic Bilbao's youth setup in 2017. He played for Bilbao Athletic, the club's reserve team, before joining Osasuna in 2021. During his time at Osasuna, Areso made 86 official appearances, scoring one goal and providing 11 assists. He also had a loan spell at Burgos CF.

Athletic Bilbao describes Areso as a right-back with stamina and a willingness to run up and down the flank for the entire match. The club also highlights his defensive improvements, making him a more complete full-back. Areso's presentation press conference is scheduled to take place at San Mames.

Areso's return to Athletic Bilbao marks a homecoming for the player, who previously spent time in the club's youth ranks. His experience and qualities will provide valuable competition and depth to the squad.
