As the NHL off-season continues, several teams are making headlines with potential player acquisitions, extensions, and trade talks. Here's a rundown of the latest rumors surrounding the Vancouver Canucks, Edmonton Oilers, and other notable NHL teams.

Canucks and Roslovic Still in Discussion

The Vancouver Canucks are reportedly still engaged in discussions with unrestricted free agent forward Jack Roslovic. According to reports, Roslovic is seeking a two- or three-year deal with an annual value of just over $3 million. While he could be a solid middle-six contributor and address Vancouver's need for a third-line center, there are questions about whether he's the best use of the Canucks' limited cap space of $3.2 million.

Some analysts believe that the Canucks might be better served by taking a "bigger swing" with their available funds, rather than signing Roslovic, who may not single-handedly elevate the team to contender status. Others point out that while Roslovic, coming off a 39-point season with the Carolina Hurricanes, could add serviceable scoring pop, his defensive game is a concern. Despite these concerns, the Canucks have shown interest in Roslovic in the past, and a shorter-term contract might be a viable option.

Oilers Eyeing Ekholm and Walman Extensions

The Edmonton Oilers are reportedly exploring potential contract extensions for veteran defensemen Mattias Ekholm and Jake Walman. While not yet in serious negotiations, preliminary talks have reportedly taken place. Ekholm, 35, is a valuable top-four blueliner, but his age and recent injuries could factor into the length and value of a potential extension. A short-term deal would be the most logical option for Ekholm.

Jake Walman is also approaching free agency next summer. Bob Stauffer said the Oilers will extend Walman. David Staple referred to Walman as a "late bloomer" in the NHL but someone who's now well-positioned to be a dependable top-four, two-way defenseman. There is speculation that the Oilers may look to extend Ekholm and Walman's contracts even before finalizing a new deal for captain Connor McDavid.

Oilers Could Look to Upgrade Goaltending

Despite staying the course with Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard this summer, there is a growing sense that the Oilers' management remains open to upgrading in net. There was speculation that Edmonton might have been among the teams that reached out to Marc-Andre Fleury to inquire about the seriousness of his retirement intentions. Although Fleury has retired, if he makes it known that he's open to joining a contender, the Oilers would be keenly interested.

Other NHL Rumors

  • Dougie Hamilton Trade: A Dougie Hamilton trade out of New Jersey is potentially being held up by the uncertainty surrounding Erik Karlsson and Rasmus Andersson. The Devils are tight against the salary cap and want to sign Luke Hughes to an eight-year extension, making a Hamilton trade a necessity.
  • Penguins Trade Talks: The Carolina Hurricanes have shown interest in Erik Karlsson. The Pittsburgh Penguins have set a high asking price for Bryan Rust and Rickard Rakell.
  • Connor McDavid's Future: NHL insider Chris Johnston suggests that while Edmonton is still the frontrunner, teams with ample cap space and a clear path to championship contention could lure Connor McDavid if he explores free agency in 2026.
  • Jason Robertson Trade Speculation: Trade speculation persists about Jason Robertson of the Dallas Stars. Seven potential trade destinations for Jason Robertson have been identified.
  • Evan Rodrigues Drawing Interest: There is "zero doubt" that teams are pursuing Florida Panthers forward Evan Rodrigues.
  • Canucks Interested in Mason McTavish: The Vancouver Canucks are reportedly linked to Anaheim Ducks center Mason McTavish.
