Joe Root has lauded Chris Woakes's bravery and commitment to the England team, confirming that the injured all-rounder is prepared to bat on Day 5 of the ongoing Test match against India at The Oval. Woakes sustained a shoulder injury on Day 1 while fielding. Despite the injury, and the fact that he couldn't bat in the first innings, Woakes is ready to "put his body on the line" to help England secure a series victory.

The incident occurred when Woakes dived to prevent a boundary, landing awkwardly on his left shoulder. He immediately left the field in pain, with his arm in a makeshift sling. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced that Woakes would play no further part in the Test due to the injury and that a further assessment would be conducted at the end of the series.

Despite the ECB's statement, there is a possibility Woakes could bat if the situation demands it. Root's comments suggest that Woakes is willing to bat through the pain, highlighting his dedication to the team.

Root acknowledged the pain Woakes is experiencing, drawing a parallel to Rishabh Pant's resilience when batting with a broken foot. He emphasized that Woakes's willingness to bat demonstrates his character and commitment to England.

England ended Day 4 at 339 for six, needing just 35 more runs to win the Test and secure a 3-1 series victory. However, rain and bad light halted play, leaving the match finely poised. While England are favorites, India will look to capitalize with the new ball on Day 5.

Root expressed his disappointment at not being able to guide England to victory on Day 4 after his classy knock of 105. He admitted that he "missed his execution" on the ball that led to his dismissal. Despite the setback, Root remains confident that England has what it takes to "get across the line" on the final day.

Woakes' injury is a significant blow to England, who are already without captain Ben Stokes due to a right shoulder injury. Woakes' absence was felt with the ball in the second innings, increasing the workload on the other seamers. Moreover, with Woakes unable to bat in England's first innings, the team was effectively down to nine wickets.

Woakes' injury could also jeopardize his chances of participating in the upcoming Ashes tour of Australia. At 36, and with a possibly dislocated shoulder, this injury could threaten the all-rounder's international career.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Woakes' injury and his ability to bat, Root's comments underscore the team's unity and determination to win the series.
