Lucas Paquetá, the West Ham United midfielder, has been cleared of spot-fixing allegations after a lengthy investigation by the Football Association (FA). The investigation, which began in August 2023, stemmed from suspicions regarding betting patterns around bookings Paquetá received in four Premier League games between November 2022 and August 2023. The matches in question were against Leicester City, Aston Villa, Leeds United, and Bournemouth.

The FA alleged that Paquetá intentionally sought to get booked in these matches to influence the betting market, a claim he vehemently denied. In May 2024, the FA formally charged the Brazilian international with breaching FA Rules E5 and F3. Had he been found guilty, Paquetá could have faced a lifetime ban from football.

Following a hearing by an independent regulatory commission, the spot-fixing charges were found to be "not proven". However, Paquetá was found to have failed to cooperate fully with the FA's investigation, leading to two additional charges being proven against him. These charges relate to his alleged failure to provide information and answer questions. A sanction for these breaches will be decided at a later date.

Despite the investigation, Paquetá continued to play for West Ham and the Brazilian national team, who supported him throughout the process. West Ham vice-chair Karren Brady expressed her pleasure at Paquetá's clearance, stating that the club had resolutely stood by him.

Manager Graham Potter has also reacted to the news, suggesting Paqueta can now excel with the "weight lifted". Potter highlighted the challenges Paquetá faced during the investigation, acknowledging the toll it took on him. He emphasized Paquetá's commitment to West Ham and his importance to the team. Potter said, "Lucas is happy and committed. He is an important person in dressing room and at the club and we love him".

Paquetá himself expressed his gratitude and relief in a statement. "Since the first day of this investigation, I have maintained my innocence against these extremely serious accusations," he said. "I can't say anything more at this time, but I would like to express how grateful I am to God and how eager I am to return to playing football with a smile on my face". He also thanked his wife, West Ham United, the fans, and his legal team for their support.

The investigation had significant consequences for Paquetá, including the collapse of a proposed £85 million move to Manchester City in August 2023. With the spot-fixing charges now cleared, it remains to be seen whether Manchester City or other top clubs will renew their interest in the midfielder. Some reports suggest West Ham may still consider selling Paquetá to fund a squad rebuild. However, Potter has stated that Paqueta is "happy and committed" to West Ham.

Looking ahead, West Ham and Potter are focused on helping Paquetá rediscover his best form. Potter is keen to give supporters the attacking football they crave and believes Paquetá can play a key role. The team begins their Premier League season against Sunderland, with Paquetá expected to feature.
