The recent announcement of India's squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 has stirred considerable debate, particularly regarding the change in the T20I vice-captaincy. Shubman Gill has replaced Axar Patel as Suryakumar Yadav's deputy, a decision that has led to questions and discussions within the cricketing fraternity.

Mohammad Kaif, former India batter, has voiced his opinion that Axar Patel "deserves an explanation" for being replaced as T20I vice-captain by Shubman Gill for the Asia Cup. Kaif hopes that Axar didn't find out about the decision through the press.

Axar Patel's elevation to the vice-captaincy occurred after the T20 World Cup when Gautam Gambhir took over as head coach, replacing Hardik Pandya. Since then, Axar has been an "excellent second in command" to Suryakumar Yadav. Now, the selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, have shifted gears, favoring Gill's "form and leadership qualities" for the role as they head into the Asia Cup. Gill previously served as vice-captain during the T20I series in Sri Lanka in July 2024. After that series, he focused on Test cricket, where he excelled in the series against England, amassing 754 runs and earning the Player of the Series award.

Suryakumar Yadav addressed the change in vice-captaincy, stating that Gill was his deputy during the last T20I he played. He also noted that Gill's focus shifted to Test cricket and the Champions Trophy, which limited his T20I appearances. Suryakumar welcomed Gill's inclusion and praised his presence in the team.

Some believe that Gill's appointment indicates that India is grooming him to be an all-format captain. However, there are reports of discontent within the camp regarding Gill's appointment. Despite the change in vice-captaincy, Axar Patel remains a valuable asset to the team. He is known for his versatility as a left-arm spinner and a capable batsman who can anchor innings and accelerate when needed. He is also considered a safe fielder.

The decision to reinstate Gill as vice-captain may be influenced by his successful tour of England, where he showcased his leadership skills and batting prowess. However, some argue that Axar has not done anything wrong to warrant being stripped of the vice-captaincy.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar acknowledged the challenge of selecting the squad due to the numerous options available. He stated that Gill's form was expected and that the team would decide on the batting lineup based on the opposition and conditions. Agarkar also clarified that Gill was the vice-captain the last time he played T20 cricket, indicating that the team had been considering him for a leadership role.

Ultimately, the decision to appoint Shubman Gill as the T20I vice-captain reflects the selectors' vision for the future of Indian cricket. While the change may be disappointing for Axar Patel, it presents an opportunity for Gill to showcase his leadership abilities and further solidify his position in the team. The Asia Cup 2025 will be a crucial test for the new leadership dynamic as India aims to defend its title.
