The Orlando Pride are reportedly finalizing a deal to acquire Mexican star Lizbeth Ovalle from Tigres UANL for a record-breaking $1.5 million. This transfer fee would mark a new high in women's soccer, surpassing the previous record held by Canadian international Olivia Smith, who moved to Arsenal for $1.34 million. Some reports indicate the fee could potentially reach $2 million. The move is expected to be announced before the NWSL transfer period ends on August 25.

Ovalle, a 25-year-old attacking midfielder, has been a key player for Tigres since her debut in 2017, winning six Liga MX Femenil titles and three Campeón de Campeonas trophies. She has also earned over 50 caps for the Mexican national team and notably scored a stunning goal against the United States in the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup.

The Orlando Pride, the reigning NWSL champions, are currently third in the league standings. Adding Ovalle to their roster is expected to bolster their squad as they push for another championship. The club has strategically navigated the NWSL's net transfer spend limit of $550,000 by utilizing flexibility created through the sale of Brazilian midfielder Adriana to Al Qadsiah in Saudi Arabia.

Ovalle had drawn interest from several prominent clubs, including FC Barcelona, the Washington Spirit, and various Women's Super League (WSL) teams. Her move to the NWSL is a significant development, making her the first Mexican player, male or female, to hold a global transfer record. Tigres is also understood to have secured a 10% sell-on clause.

This transfer signifies the increasing financial investment in women's soccer, with transfer fees steadily rising. The world record transfer fee has been broken four times in the last two years, reflecting the growing value placed on top female players.
