The Calgary Flames have solidified their goaltending future by signing Dustin Wolf to a seven-year, $52.5 million contract extension. The deal, which carries an average annual value of $7.5 million, commences in the 2026-27 season and extends through 2033. This significant commitment underscores the Flames' confidence in the 24-year-old as their long-term solution in net.
Wolf is currently playing under a two-year contract he signed in July 2024 and was set to become a restricted free agent after the current season. By inking this extension now, the Flames have preemptively secured his services for the foreseeable future.
"I've been looking to hopefully get something done," Wolf told Flames TV. "There was no timeline, but kind of sooner the better. I'll be here the next eight years and really excited to call this place my home". He also expressed his excitement about the team's belief in his ability to help them win and compete for a championship.
In his first full NHL season (2024-25), Wolf appeared in 53 games, achieving a 29-16-8 record with three shutouts, a 2.64 goals-against average, and a .910 save percentage. Among NHL rookie goaltenders, he led in wins (29), saves (1,409), and shutouts (3). His performance placed him among the league's top goalies, ranking 11th in save percentage and wins, and 16th in goals-against average. According to Sportlogiq, Wolf's "5 on 5 goals saved above expected per 60" placed him 8th in the league.
Wolf's stellar rookie campaign earned him a spot on the NHL All-Rookie Team and a second-place finish in Calder Trophy voting, awarded to the league's top rookie. Montreal Canadiens defenseman Lane Hutson ultimately won the award. Notably, despite his impressive performance, Wolf was not invited to the United States Men's Olympic Orientation Camp for the 2026 Winter Olympics.
Prior to his NHL debut, Wolf consistently demonstrated exceptional talent at every level. He was twice named the AHL's Goaltender of the Year (2021-22 and 2022-23) and also received the Les Cunningham Award as the AHL's Most Valuable Player in 2022-23. In the WHL, playing for the Everett Silvertips, he was a two-time winner of the WHL Goaltender of the Year award (2019-20 and 2020-21) and earned CHL Goaltender of the Year honors in 2019-20. Furthermore, he won a Gold Medal with Team USA at the 2021 World Junior Championship.
Drafted by the Flames in the seventh round (214th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft, Wolf has consistently defied expectations. Despite being considered undersized for a goalie at 6'0", he has consistently posted impressive numbers throughout his career.
The Flames' decision to invest in Wolf reflects their belief in his potential to be a cornerstone of the franchise for years to come. With this contract extension, Calgary has secured a talented young goaltender who has already proven himself capable of competing at the highest level.
