Craig Bellamy has criticized Jesse Marsch for his premature celebrations during a friendly match between Wales and Canada, expressing his desire for a rematch at the World Cup next year. The match saw Canada, managed by Marsch, secure a 1-0 victory over Wales, managed by Bellamy, thanks to a stunning free-kick from Derek Cornelius.
Bellamy was unhappy with Marsch's behavior in stoppage time, feeling that the celebrations were disrespectful while Wales was still trying to salvage a draw. He stated that he hopes to face Marsch and Canada again at the World Cup, fueled by his intense dislike of losing.
Despite the defeat, Bellamy acknowledged the need to be gracious but admitted that he "really hate[s] losing more than I like winning". He observed Marsch shaking hands with his coaches before the final whistle, something Bellamy seemed to take issue with.
Bellamy used the friendly to give opportunities to new and fringe players. He handed debuts to three players, including Cardiff teenager Ronan Kpakio, who started at right-back, and midfielders Joel Colwill and Kai Andrews, who came off the bench. Charlie Crew also made his first start. Bellamy said he was impressed with how the players adapted to the team's style of play.
Bellamy emphasized that he wasn't making excuses for the loss and is focused on winning in the present. He said he needed to evaluate the squad and assess how well the players have grasped the team's principles.
The defeat against Canada was only the second in Bellamy's 12-game tenure and his first at home. The match took place after Wales' 1-0 World Cup qualifying victory in Kazakhstan, with Bellamy making eight changes to the starting lineup.
