R. Ashwin has revealed a conversation between Sanju Samson and Gautam Gambhir regarding Samson's place in the Indian team, particularly highlighting the team management's strong support for the player in the Asia Cup 2025. This revelation comes after Sanju Samson was included in the playing XI for India's opening match against the UAE.
Prior to the Asia Cup, there were doubts about whether Samson would be in the playing XI, especially with the inclusion of Shubman Gill in the squad. Gill had been absent from the T20I side for a while, during which Samson opened the batting, scoring three centuries in 2024. With Gill's return and expected opening position, there were speculations that Samson might not find a place, with Jitesh Sharma possibly filling the role of keeper-finisher in the middle order.
However, Samson was included in the XI against the UAE, batting in the middle order at No. 5. While he didn't get a chance to bat in that game, which India won convincingly, he did take a catch behind the wickets.
Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel "Ash ki Baat," expressed his surprise and pleasure at the backing Samson is receiving. He quoted Suryakumar Yadav's statement from a press conference that they are "looking after him" and noted that it is evident. Ashwin also pointed out that if Samson is to play, it would likely be as a powerplay enforcer, coming in if a wicket falls early.
Ashwin termed the team's support for Samson as "Project Sanju Samson". He revealed that during an interview, Samson told him that Gautam Gambhir had assured him that even if he gets dismissed for 21 ducks, he would still be picked for the 22nd game. This, according to Ashwin, demonstrates the confidence that the coach and Suryakumar have in Samson and what he brings to the team. Ashwin believes that the team management is willing to go the extra mile to create a place for him.
While Ashwin is happy about the team's backing of Samson, he also acknowledged the potential tactical challenges. Given that Samson typically bats in the top three, he might be forced to bat lower down the order at No. 5, depending on the match situation. Ashwin noted that this might be somewhat unfair to Samson, but he is still pleased that Samson is getting an opportunity.
India is scheduled to play their second match against Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai.
