The 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 has experienced a delay due to light rain showers around the track. The race, originally scheduled to begin at 12:45 PM EST on Sunday, May 25, 2025, is now on hold as Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) officials monitor the weather conditions.

Meteorologists had earlier expressed cautious optimism about the weather, with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis predicting mostly cloudy skies and cool conditions, with temperatures in the mid-60s and light winds. While rain clouds were observed moving in from the west, forecasters believed that a layer of dry air might prevent any heavy rainfall, suggesting only a few sprinkles were likely to reach the Indy metro area.

Despite the earlier optimistic forecasts, light rain began to fall as pre-race ceremonies were underway, leading to the decision to delay the start. According to FOX Sports' Bob Pockrass, drivers were given a 10-minute engine warmup period, and efforts were made to dry the backstretch of the track. The radar indicated that the rain would clear up in approximately 15 minutes, with drivers expected to start their engines around 1:21 PM ET.

The delay has cast uncertainty over Kyle Larson's attempt to run "the Double" for the second consecutive year. The "Double" involves competing in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR race on the same day. Last year, Larson's attempt was derailed by a four-hour rain delay at the Indy 500. With a limited time buffer, any significant delay could jeopardize his ability to participate in both races. Jeff Gordon, Vice Chairman of Hendrick Motorsports, stated that Larson is committed to being at Charlotte Motor Speedway for driver introductions at 5:25 PM ET, regardless of how the Indy 500 unfolds.

There is a scenario where Larson might start a delayed Indianapolis 500 but then leave the car, with Tony Kanaan taking over. However, the hope is that the race can proceed without major delays, allowing Larson to complete all 1,100 miles of "the Double".

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is equipped with advanced drying technology, including "jet dryers" that use hot air to quickly dry the track and minimize delays. The track has faced weather-related challenges in the past. Out of the 108 previous Indy 500 races, measurable precipitation has fallen on 47 race days. The 2024 race experienced a three-hour delay due to 1.48 inches of rain.

Currently, the weather in Indianapolis is cloudy with a temperature of 62°F (17°C) and 55% humidity. The chance of rain is estimated at around 0%. The forecast for the remainder of the day indicates cloudy conditions with a 65% chance of rain and temperatures between 52°F (11°C) and 65°F (18°C).
