As the Edmonton Oilers gear up for training camp, uncertainty surrounds the immediate return of Zach Hyman. The winger is recovering from a wrist injury sustained during the Western Conference Final against the Dallas Stars. While the team is optimistic, Hyman himself is hesitant to make any promises regarding his availability for the start of the 2025-26 season.
Hyman suffered a fractured wrist with ligament damage in Game 4 of the Western Conference Final, after taking a hit from Mason Marchment. He immediately left the game, and later underwent surgery in late May to repair the damage.
General Manager Stan Bowman addressed the media on Wednesday, stating that he doesn't have a specific timetable for Hyman's return. However, Bowman added that he is "not worried" and that Hyman isn't expected to miss much time, "if he misses any".
Hyman has resumed skating and is no longer in a cast, but will need additional rehab time. As a result, he will not be present with the team at the beginning of training camp. It remains unclear if he will be ready for the Oilers' season opener against the Calgary Flames on October 8th.
Hyman emphasized the uncertainty of his situation, stating that there are "no guarantees" regarding his return timeline. He is taking a cautious approach to his recovery and doesn't want to commit to a timeline he can't keep.
Last season, the 33-year-old played in 73 games, contributing 27 goals and 44 points, including seven game-winning goals. His absence at the start of training camp could open up an opportunity for players like Tomasek, Savoie, and Howard to compete for a spot alongside Connor McDavid.
In other Oilers news, Hyman addressed concerns about Connor McDavid's contract situation, assuring that the team remains focused and that McDavid is committed to the team. The Oilers also brought in Peter Aubry as their new goalie coach, replacing Dustin Schwartz. The team hopes Aubry can help Stuart Skinner regain his top form.
