Mauricio Pochettino Dismisses Tottenham Hotspur Reunion: Focus on Current Project, Reunion Deemed Unrealistic

Mauricio Pochettino has definitively ruled out a return to Tottenham Hotspur, stating that such a move is "not realistic" at this juncture in his career. This declaration comes amidst speculation linking him to the managerial vacancy at the North London club, which arose after Ange Postecoglou's recent departure.

Pochettino, currently the head coach of the United States men's national team (USMNT), emphasized his commitment to his present role and the project of leading the U.S. into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. He signed a two-year contract with the USMNT in September 2024.

"Today it's not realistic," Pochettino stated. "Look where I am. Look where we (his backroom staff) are. The answer is so clear. I think, since I left in 2019, my name has always been on the list [of rumors]. I've seen the rumors, we are 100 coaches on the list. Don't be worried about that. If something happens [in the future], you for sure will see, but I am so happy in this moment and we cannot talk about this type of thing."

Pochettino's previous tenure at Tottenham, from 2014 to 2019, was marked by significant progress and memorable moments. He guided the team to a Champions League final in 2019 and a second-place finish in the Premier League in 2017. His departure in November 2019, however, left a void, and his name has consistently been linked with a potential return whenever the managerial position became available.

Spurs recently parted ways with Ange Postecoglou on Friday, just over two weeks after he led them to their first major trophy in 17 years with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final. Despite that success, the club endured a dismal domestic campaign, finishing just above the Premier League's relegation zone after 22 defeats-marking their worst season in nearly 50 years.

While Pochettino's return is off the table, Tottenham has been linked with several other potential candidates, including Brentford's Thomas Frank, Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, and Fulham's Marco Silva. The club's technical director, Johan Lange, is reportedly leading the search for Postecoglou's replacement.

Pochettino's immediate focus remains on his duties with the USMNT. The team recently suffered a 2-1 defeat to Turkey in a friendly match, marking their third consecutive loss. Pochettino has a record of five wins and four losses in his nine matches in charge. The USMNT is scheduled to play a final pre-Gold Cup exhibition match against Switzerland.

The Argentine manager's decision to stay with the USMNT underscores his commitment to the long-term project of developing American soccer and preparing the team for the challenges of hosting the 2026 World Cup. His tactical expertise, focus on player development, and emphasis on creating a strong team culture are seen as valuable assets for the USMNT as they aim to elevate their competitiveness on the international stage.
