The 2025-26 Women's Super League (WSL) season is underway, with several exciting matches on the opening weekend. Here's a look at some of the key games:

Liverpool v Everton

The Merseyside derby between Liverpool and Everton kicked off the season at Anfield. Everton has dominated recent WSL encounters, remaining undefeated in their last seven meetings with Liverpool. In fact, Everton's women have won all five of their previous derbies at Anfield without conceding a single goal. Liverpool, however, hoped to break that streak in front of their home fans. Liverpool finished seventh in the WSL last season, just one point ahead of Everton. Marie Höbinger, Liverpool midfielder, expressed her determination to end Liverpool's losing streak in the WSL derby. New Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor, who previously managed Manchester City, has a strong record against Everton, winning eight of his nine previous league matches against them. The team lineups have been confirmed.

Tottenham Hotspur v West Ham United

Tottenham Hotspur faced West Ham United at Brisbane Road. Both teams were looking to improve on their performances from last season, where they finished near the bottom of the table. Spurs have had a quiet summer transfer window, with Toko Koga being their only major signing. West Ham, on the other hand, were very active in the transfer market, bringing in five new players. West Ham won two of their three meetings against Tottenham last season. Martin Ho, the new Tottenham coach, previously an assistant manager at Manchester United, was hoping to make a positive start. Rehanne Skinner, West Ham's manager, confirmed that the squad was fully fit for the match. Lineups have been confirmed with Martin Ho having made four changes from their final pre-season clash.

Manchester United v Leicester City

Manchester United hosted Leicester City at Leigh Sports Village. Manchester United finished third last season and will be aiming for another strong campaign. Leicester, meanwhile, will be hoping to avoid a relegation battle after finishing 10th last season. Manchester United has dominated the head-to-head record between the two teams, winning 11 out of 14 previous encounters. Marc Skinner will be without several players for the game, but new signing Jess Park is eligible to make her debut. Rick Passmoor is in charge of his first game for Leicester City. Manchester United's lineup is expected to be similar to their recent Champions League qualifying matches.
