The Socceroos have secured their place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking their sixth consecutive appearance at the global finals and seventh overall. This achievement follows a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on Wednesday, June 10, 2025 (AEST).

Australia's qualification was confirmed after finishing second in Group C of the Third Qualifying Round. Japan topped the group, having been defeated only once by Australia in Perth. This result means Saudi Arabia and Indonesia will proceed to the fourth round of qualifiers, where they will have another opportunity to secure their spot in the World Cup.

The match against Saudi Arabia was a tense affair, with the home side initially taking the lead. However, the Socceroos demonstrated resilience and determination. Connor Metcalfe scored his first international goal just before halftime to equalize, and Mitchell Duke followed up with another goal shortly after the break, putting Australia in the lead. Adding to the drama, goalkeeper Maty Ryan, in his 100th appearance for the national team, saved a penalty in the 85th minute, preserving Australia's advantage and securing the victory.

Coach Tony Popovic made three changes to the lineup from the previous match against Japan, with Jason Geria, Patrick Yazbek, and Mitchell Duke stepping into the starting eleven. The team displayed a composed performance in front of a vocal crowd at King Abdullah Sports City, underscoring the growing impact of Australian football on the international stage.

While Australia celebrates their qualification, Saudi Arabia's World Cup hopes now rest on navigating the fourth round of qualifiers. To secure an automatic spot, Saudi Arabia needed to defeat Australia by five goals or more. Failing to achieve this, they must now compete with other third and fourth-placed teams for a chance to advance.

The expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature 48 teams, offering more opportunities for nations to participate in football's premier tournament. The Socceroos' successful qualification promises excitement and celebration across Australia as they prepare for the challenges ahead. Football Australia has expressed pride in the team's achievement, highlighting their commitment and resilience. As Australia looks forward to the World Cup, they also anticipate hosting the AFC Women's Asian Cup Australia 2026™ in Western Australia, Queensland, and New South Wales, further cementing the nation's role in the global football community.
