England Under-21s initiated their Euro title defense with a 3-1 victory over the Czech Republic, with Harvey Elliott playing a pivotal role. The match, held at MOL Aréna in Dunajska Streda, Slovakia, saw England secure their seventh win in eight competitive matches.

The Young Lions, coached by Lee Carsley, showcased an attacking mindset from the outset, despite facing squad withdrawals leading up to the tournament. The first half saw both teams creating opportunities. England's captain, James McAtee, missed an early chance, while Omari Hutchinson tested Czech goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek. The Czech Republic responded with Martin Suchomel flashing a dangerous ball across the goal, narrowly missing a connection from Vaclav Sejk.

Harvey Elliott broke the deadlock in the 39th minute, finishing off a well-constructed attacking move. Tino Livramento's deflected cross found McAtee, who teed up Elliott to drill a low shot past Hornicek.

England extended their lead shortly after the break, in the 48th minute. Livramento was again instrumental, beating his man and delivering a low cross that Jonathan Rowe touched past the goalkeeper.

The Czech Republic responded swiftly, with Daniel Fila heading in a cross from Sejk just three minutes later, reducing the deficit. However, England ensured the victory in the 76th minute when Charlie Cresswell headed in Alex Scott's corner.

Carsley had challenged his team to surpass the achievements of the 2023 squad, which won the Euros without conceding a goal. The 4-2-2-2 formation allowed for creative interchange among the attacking players. Elliot Anderson and Alex Scott provided a solid midfield base, while the full-backs, Livramento and Archie Gray, displayed comfort in possession, enhancing England's control.

Ethan Nwaneri, the 18-year-old Arsenal winger, made a sharp appearance as a second-half substitute, hinting at his potential impact later in the tournament.

Livramento's outstanding performance earned him the Player of the Match award. His Premier League quality, along with the contributions of Elliott and McAtee, were evident.

The victory places England second in Group B on goal difference, setting the stage for their upcoming matches against Slovenia and Germany in Nitra. The team hopes to replicate their 2023 success, where they also defeated the Czech Republic in their opening match.
