James Milner, the veteran midfielder, is set to embark on his 24th consecutive season in the Premier League after signing a one-year contract extension with Brighton & Hove Albion. This move keeps him at the south-coast club and positions him within striking distance of breaking the all-time Premier League appearance record.

Milner's current tally stands at 638 Premier League games, a figure amassed over a career that began in 2002 with Leeds United when he was just 16 years old. He needs just 16 more appearances to surpass Gareth Barry's record of 653. While an August injury hampered his appearances in the 2024-25 season, limiting him to only four league games, this new contract offers him a renewed opportunity to chase the milestone.

Brighton's head coach, Fabian Hurzeler, expressed his delight at retaining Milner's services. He acknowledged that Milner's on-field contributions were limited last season due to injury but emphasized his invaluable presence within the squad. Hurzeler highlighted Milner's experience as a key asset, particularly for the younger players, and praised him as a great influence in the team environment.

Milner's career has been marked by versatility and consistent performance. He has played for Leeds United, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, Liverpool, and now Brighton, showcasing his adaptability across various positions. He has also won the Premier League title three times, twice with Manchester City and once with Liverpool.

Beyond the potential record, this contract extension could also see Milner challenging another significant milestone. By next May, when the 2025/26 season concludes, Milner will be five months past his 40th birthday. This puts him in contention to become the second-oldest outfield player to feature in the Premier League, behind only Teddy Sheringham. Ryan Giggs currently holds the second spot, having played until he was 40 years, 5 months, and 7 days old. If Milner plays for Brighton after May 11 next year, he will surpass Giggs. Sheringham's record would stand unless Milner extends his deal by a further year or agrees a contract with another Premier League club for what would be a groundbreaking 25th successive season in the top flight.

Milner's journey is a testament to his professionalism, dedication, and enduring passion for the game. From his early days as a prodigious talent at Leeds United to becoming a seasoned veteran, he has consistently demonstrated his value to every team he has represented. As he approaches his 40th birthday, he continues to defy expectations and remains a respected figure in the Premier League.
