The Indian Women's Hockey team suffered a narrow 2-3 defeat against Australia in their FIH Pro League 2024-25 match held at the Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre in London on Saturday, June 14, 2025.

Before the start of the match, both teams observed a minute of silence to honor the victims of the recent aircraft tragedy in Ahmedabad.

Australia took an early lead, establishing a 3-0 advantage with goals from Courtney Schonell (16'), Lexie Pickering (27'), and Tatum Stewart (35'). Schonell's goal came from a sharp pass from Grace Stewart, which she finished with precision. Pickering's goal followed a turnover from Navneet, resulting in a series of shots on goal where she slotted in the rebound. Stewart then converted a penalty stroke to extend Australia's lead further.

Despite the deficit, the Indian team demonstrated resilience and determination in the second half. Deepika converted a penalty corner in the 44th minute, injecting a renewed sense of purpose into the team. In the final quarter, India dominated possession and earned a series of penalty corners. Neha capitalized on a rebound off the Australian goalkeeper in the 52nd minute, narrowing the score to 3-2.

India continued to press hard, creating several opportunities to equalize in the final minutes. However, the Australian defense held firm, denying India's comeback attempt. A late penalty corner chance for India went begging, as they couldn't convert, sealing the victory for Australia.

The match also marked a significant milestone for Indian midfielder Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke, who made her 50th international appearance for India.

With this loss, India's ranking in the FIH Pro League points table has slipped to seventh place. The team will face Australia again in their next fixture on Sunday, June 15, providing an immediate opportunity to bounce back.

Both teams displayed intent and valued possession in the opening quarter. India adopted a patient approach, applying pressure on the Australian defense. Australia earned a penalty corner in the 10th minute, but India's defense held strong. India's best chance in the first quarter came from a swift attacking move, forcing Australian goalkeeper Zoe Newman into a double save.
