VVS Laxman, the Head of the BCCI's Centre of Excellence, was recently spotted with the Indian team in England, attending an intra-squad game ahead of the Test series against England. This occurred during the absence of head coach Gautam Gambhir, who had to return to India due to a family emergency. Gambhir's mother was reported to have suffered a heart attack and is currently in the ICU.

The presence of Laxman during this crucial preparatory phase has sparked speculation about his role within the team, particularly in Gambhir's absence. Reports suggest that Laxman was closely monitoring the intra-squad match alongside chief selector Ajit Agarkar. With the first Test against England drawing near, their presence was seen as playing a significant role in evaluating the players, including captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Rishabh Pant.

However, conflicting reports have emerged regarding the exact nature of Laxman's involvement. While some suggest that he might be filling in for Gambhir temporarily, a Cricbuzz report indicates that Laxman is not in England for any official assignment with the team. A BCCI source stated that Laxman traveled to London from Lausanne for another purpose and simply stopped by to spend time with the players. Another source mentioned that "The target is to win in England," implying that Laxman might have had discussions with the coaches and selectors present, and perhaps even attended the intra-squad game.

Despite his presence, it's been clarified that Laxman holds no official role with the team during this tour. Some reports suggest that Laxman was in Switzerland for a conference before heading to England.

The intra-squad game, which ended recently, saw players like Shardul Thakur and Sarfaraz Khan scoring centuries. It provided a valuable opportunity for the team management to assess the players' form and readiness ahead of the Test series. The five-match Test series against England is scheduled to commence on June 20 in Leeds.

Meanwhile, Gautam Gambhir is expected to rejoin the team before the first Test match. His mother is showing signs of recovery. He has been the head coach of the Indian cricket team since 2024.

VVS Laxman's experience of playing in England could be beneficial for the team. He has toured England three times as a player, scoring 586 runs in 19 innings, including five half-centuries. He has also played several first-class matches in England, gaining valuable experience in English conditions.
