Shubman Gill is stepping into a significant role as India embarks on a new chapter in Test cricket. Following the retirements of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Gill has been appointed as the captain, shouldering the responsibility of leading the team and setting an example for his teammates. As India prepares to face England in a five-match Test series, beginning June 20th at Headingley, all eyes will be on Gill as he navigates this new leadership role.

Gill, at 25 years old, is aware of the magnitude of the opportunity and the responsibility that comes with it. In a recent interview, he expressed that being named captain was "definitely a bit overwhelming," highlighting that playing Test cricket for India has always been a dream. He understands the honor and the considerable responsibility entrusted to him and looks forward to the exciting challenge ahead against England.

Gill emphasizes the importance of "leading by example," not only through his performance on the field but also through discipline and hard work off the field. He believes that a good leader should know when to step in and when to give players space, understanding what motivates them to perform at their best. Building strong relationships and knowing his players on a deeper level is also a priority for Gill, so he is aware of how to get the best out of them.

While acknowledging the pressure of filling the shoes of Kohli and Sharma, Gill aims to blend their leadership qualities while carving his own path. Former England white-ball captain Jos Buttler, who played alongside Gill in the IPL, believes that Gill possesses qualities reminiscent of both Kohli and Sharma but will ultimately be "very much his own man." Gill will bat at number four, taking Kohli's former spot.

Former cricketers and analysts have weighed in on Gill's appointment. Ricky Ponting has voiced his support and said the BCCI's choice should be given a long-term chance. Graeme Swann believes that despite the absence of Kohli and Sharma, India has enough talent to remain competitive. Dinesh Karthik advised Gill to focus on his batting, especially in overseas conditions, to earn the respect of his team.

The series against England presents a stern test for Gill and the new-look Indian team. England, however, are without the retired duo of James Anderson and Stuart Broad. India will also be without key bowler Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Shami. While some believe England might have an advantage, others emphasize that India still possesses a strong bowling attack capable of exploiting the English conditions.

Ultimately, Gill's success as captain will depend on his ability to balance his leadership responsibilities with his batting performance, foster a positive team culture, and make strategic decisions on the field. His focus on leading by example, combined with his understanding of his teammates, positions him well to guide India through this transition period and strive for success in the upcoming series against England.
