In a move that underscores the commitment to supporting athletes and nurturing sporting talent, the Sports Ministry has approved a monthly out-of-pocket allowance for Indian hockey players. This decision, made during the 156th Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) meeting on Thursday, marks a significant step towards recognizing and rewarding the dedication and hard work of these athletes.
The allowance, set at ₹25,000 per month, will benefit 80 hockey players, comprising 40 men and 40 women, who are part of the national camps under the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). This financial support aims to ease the burden of daily expenses and provide players with additional resources to focus on their training and performance. The total expenditure for this initiative is estimated to be ₹20 lakh per month.
This decision comes after repeated requests from Hockey India, the sport's governing body, highlighting the need for increased financial assistance for players. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya emphasized that the allowance was granted based on the players' consistent performance and merit. He also stated that Hockey India will be responsible for submitting a list of eligible players to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) each month. The list would be based on the players form and fitness.
The allowance is specifically targeted at players in the developmental group of the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). It's worth noting that core group athletes already receive a monthly allowance of ₹50,000. This initiative ensures that athletes at different stages of their careers receive appropriate support.
Currently, many hockey players are employed by various departments and organizations, from which they draw salaries. They also receive prize money for outstanding performances in major international events such as the Olympics and Asian Games. This new monthly allowance will serve as an additional source of income, further incentivizing players and providing them with financial stability.
This initiative is particularly significant in light of the Indian men's hockey team's impressive achievements in recent years. Their bronze medals at the Paris 2024 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics, along with their gold medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2023, have brought immense pride to the nation. The Sports Ministry's decision to provide a monthly allowance is a fitting tribute to their success and a testament to the government's commitment to supporting the sport.
Beyond financial assistance, the Sports Ministry has been actively working to improve sports infrastructure and promote grassroots development through initiatives like the Khelo India program. With a record allocation of ₹3794 crores for FY 2025–26, the ministry is investing in building a strong foundation for sports in the country.
