Day three of the first Test between England and India at Headingley saw momentum swing back and forth, ultimately concluding with India holding a 96-run lead with eight wickets in hand. Jasprit Bumrah's impressive five-wicket haul was the highlight of the day for the visitors, while KL Rahul's composed batting helped India stay in control despite some challenging periods.

England began the day trailing, but Harry Brook's aggressive approach, along with contributions from the lower order, allowed them to get close to India's first innings total of 471. Brook, in particular, was a standout performer, scoring 99 runs in a stroke-filled innings. However, he fell just short of his century, dismissed by Prasidh Krishna.

India's bowling performance was a mixed bag. While Bumrah was exceptional, claiming 5 wickets for 83 runs, the other bowlers struggled to maintain consistency and control. Prasidh Krishna, in particular, had a tough day, conceding 128 runs in his 20 overs. Mohammed Siraj also had an inconsistent outing. India's fielding was also below par, with multiple catches being dropped, which allowed England to build partnerships and reduce the deficit. India dropped as many as five catches in the innings.

Despite the challenges, Bumrah's brilliance ensured that England were bowled out for 465, giving India a slender six-run lead. Bumrah's five-wicket haul was his 14th in Tests and his 10th in SENA countries. He also equaled Kapil Dev's record for most five-wicket hauls by an Indian bowler in away Tests (12).

India's second innings began cautiously, with Yashasvi Jaiswal falling early. However, KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan steadied the ship with a 66-run partnership for the second wicket. Sudharsan was eventually dismissed for 30, but Rahul remained unbeaten on 47 at the close of play, along with Shubman Gill (6*).

The day's play was cut short due to rain, with India reaching 90 for 2 at stumps, leading by 96 runs. The match is delicately poised, with both teams having opportunities to seize the advantage on the remaining days. India will be aiming to build a substantial lead to put England under pressure, while England will be looking to strike early and restrict India's scoring. The weather forecast for the remaining days suggests grey skies, which could favor the bowlers and make batting more challenging.

Overall, Day 3 was a day of fluctuating fortunes, with Jasprit Bumrah's stellar performance being the standout moment. However, India will need to improve their fielding and maintain consistency with the ball to capitalize on their current lead and secure a victory in the first Test. KL Rahul's role will be crucial for India to set up a good score on Day 4.
