Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian cricket captain and ex-BCCI President, has expressed his interest in coaching the Indian cricket team in the future. In a recent interview, the 53-year-old addressed speculation about his future plans in cricket.

Ganguly, who served as Team Director of Delhi Capitals from 2018-19 and 2022-24, stated that he had not seriously considered the role previously due to his involvement in various administrative roles after retiring from competitive cricket in 2013. He highlighted his tenure as BCCI President, emphasizing his contribution to promoting women's cricket in India. "I never really thought about it because I got into different roles. I finished (competitive cricket) in 2013 and then became Board (BCCI) President," Ganguly said. When asked about coaching the Indian team, Ganguly responded, "We'll see what the future holds. I'm just 53, so let's see what happens. I'm open to it. We'll see where it goes."

While open to coaching the national side, Ganguly has firmly dismissed any interest in entering politics. When asked about joining a political party ahead of the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, he stated, "I am not interested." He reiterated this stance when questioned about the possibility of being offered the state's chief minister position.

Ganguly also shared his thoughts on the current Indian coach, Gautam Gambhir. "Gautam (Gambhir) is doing a good job," Ganguly said, noting Gambhir's improvement since the Champions Trophy victory in Dubai earlier this year. He acknowledged that Gambhir had a slow start, losing to Australia and New Zealand, but has since picked up momentum. Ganguly further added, "This is going to be a big series (vs England)."

When asked about Gambhir's coaching style and tactical acumen, Ganguly said, "I haven't seen him from very close in this role, but I know he is very passionate. I haven't observed his strategies closely because I haven't worked with him as a coach." He described Gambhir as "very straightforward" and "very open" about his feelings regarding the team, players, and other aspects of the game. Ganguly recalled his playing days with Gambhir, noting his respect for senior players and his continued passion for the job.

Ganguly believes that Gambhir should be given time to grow into the role. "I wish him all the best. He's just a year into the job, and this will be an important (England) tour. He struggled a bit in Australia, but just like everyone else, he'll learn, he'll grow, and he'll become better," Ganguly said.

Besides his potential future role in cricket, Ganguly revealed that a biopic about his life, starring Rajkumar Rao, is slated for release by the end of 2026. The shooting is scheduled to commence in January, with pre-production, scripting, and story writing currently underway.
