USMNT and Mexico Secure Gold Cup Group Wins, Overcoming Underwhelming Play and Concerns

The 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup group stage concluded this week, with both the USMNT and Mexico securing the top spots in their respective groups. However, their performances have been anything but dominant, raising questions about their prospects as the tournament progresses.

USMNT's Imperfect Perfection

The United States Men's National Team finished atop Group D with a perfect 3-0-0 record, securing nine points. Their journey, however, wasn't without its bumps. They concluded group play with a 2-1 victory against Haiti at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Malik Tillman, who has been a standout player for the USMNT this summer, opened the scoring early in the 10th minute with a header. Haiti responded with an equalizer by Louicius Don Deedson in the 19th minute, capitalizing on a mistake by U.S. goalkeeper Matt Freese. Patrick Agyemang ultimately secured the win for the U.S. in the 75th minute.

Despite the victory, the USMNT's performance was far from convincing. Coach Mauricio Pochettino made four changes to the starting lineup, giving opportunities to players like Brenden Aaronson, Tyler Adams, Quinn Sullivan, and John Tolkin. While the team started strong, Freese's error disrupted their momentum. The USMNT will face Costa Rica in the quarterfinals.

Mexico Edges Out Group A

Mexico also finished atop their group, Group A, but their path was equally unconvincing. They concluded the group stage with a lackluster 0-0 draw against Costa Rica. A late bicycle-kick goal by Santiago Gimenez was disallowed due to an offside call, further adding to the frustration.

"El Tri" secured the top spot due to goal difference, finishing with seven points, the same as Costa Rica. Mexico's earlier victories against the Dominican Republic (3-2) and Suriname (2-0) were enough to give them the edge. However, their over-reliance on set-pieces, with four of their five goals coming from corner kicks, highlights a lack of fluidity in their attack. Mexico will face Saudi Arabia in the quarterfinals.

Other Group Stage Developments

Several other teams have secured their places in the knockout stages. In Group A, Costa Rica finished as runners-up and will face the USMNT in the quarterfinals. Group D saw Saudi Arabia finish second, setting up a quarterfinal clash with Mexico. The remaining teams are still battling for their spots.

Looking Ahead

The USMNT and Mexico are considered co-favorites to win the Gold Cup, with both having odds of +190. However, their less-than-stellar performances in the group stage suggest that the road to the final will be challenging. With the tournament serving as the final competitive event before the 2026 World Cup, both teams will need to improve significantly if they hope to lift the trophy and build momentum for the upcoming World Cup. The Gold Cup final is scheduled for July 6 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.
