Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger has claimed he was racially abused during their Club World Cup match against Mexican side Pachuca on Sunday, June 22, 2025, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The alleged incident occurred near the end of the game, which Real Madrid won 3-1.

Following the final whistle, Rudiger was visibly upset and engaged in a heated exchange with Pachuca captain Gustavo Cabral. The German international then spoke with Brazilian referee Ramon Abatti Abel. While it remains unclear whether the alleged abuse came from a player or someone in the crowd, the referee did cross his arms in front of his chest, signaling the activation of FIFA's anti-racism protocol.

Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso confirmed that Rudiger had reported the incident. "Toni told us something, we support Toni, and we will see what happens," Alonso stated in the post-match press conference. "I think the FIFA protocol has been activated to investigate, but if it has happened, all measures should be taken, and we support Antonio because it's something unacceptable. In football, there is no tolerance for this, and if it happened, then measures should be taken. This is what Antonio has told us, and we believe him. It's being investigated now."

Cabral, 39, has denied racially abusing Rudiger, claiming his words were misinterpreted. He stated that he called Rudiger a "coward," using a Spanish phrase similar to another with racist undertones. Cabral insisted he told the referee he had only called Rudiger a coward. Pachuca coach Jaime Lozano said he was unaware of the incident but would speak with his player.

FIFA, the world governing body and tournament organizer, has not yet issued an official statement but is reportedly investigating the matter.

The match itself saw Real Madrid secure a 3-1 victory despite Raul Asencio's early sending-off. Jude Bellingham, Arda Guler, and Federico Valverde scored for Real Madrid, while Elias Montiel scored a late consolation goal for Pachuca. This win puts Real Madrid at the top of Group H.

The incident involving Rudiger has sparked widespread condemnation, with many calling for swift and decisive action if the allegations are proven true. Racism in football remains a significant concern, and organizations like FIFA have protocols in place to address such incidents. The outcome of FIFA's investigation is awaited.
