Liam Delap's first goal for Chelsea has set up a tantalizing Club World Cup clash with Benfica. The 22-year-old striker, a recent £30 million signing from Ipswich Town, found the net in Chelsea's 3-0 victory over Esperance Tunis, securing their place in the round of 16. The match against Benfica is scheduled for Saturday in Charlotte.

Delap's goal came at a crucial moment, just after Tosin Adarabioyo had broken the deadlock in first-half stoppage time. Enzo Fernandez provided the assist, with Delap turning brilliantly to beat a defender and slot the ball past the goalkeeper. Tyrique George added a third goal late in the game, sealing a comfortable win for the Blues.

Chelsea's path to the Club World Cup has been eventful. Despite a 2-0 victory over LAFC in their opening match, they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Flamengo, leaving their progression uncertain. However, the win against Esperance Tunis ensured their qualification as runners-up in Group D.

Meanwhile, Benfica surprised many by topping Group C, defeating Bayern Munich 1-0. This result means Chelsea will face the Portuguese side in the round of 16, avoiding a potential encounter with the German champions. Benfica's victory was their first ever in 14 competitive meetings with Bayern, marking a historic moment for the club.

The Club World Cup is taking place in the United States and features 32 teams competing in a new, expanded format. The tournament began on June 14 and will conclude with the final on July 13. Chelsea and Manchester City are the Premier League representatives, having qualified based on their Champions League performances over the past four seasons.

Delap's arrival at Chelsea has generated considerable excitement. The young striker impressed during his time at Ipswich Town, scoring 12 Premier League goals despite the club's relegation. His move to Chelsea reunites him with Cole Palmer, with whom he played in Manchester City's youth team. He also will work again under manager Enzo Maresca, who coached Delap in Manchester City's Elite Development Squad.

Speaking after the match against ES Tunis, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca praised Delap's goal and emphasized the importance of building a winning mentality within the team. With Nicolas Jackson suspended for the match against Benfica, Delap is expected to lead the line once again, presenting him with another opportunity to impress.

Chelsea fans will be hoping that Delap's first goal is a sign of things to come as they look to compete for silverware on all fronts this season. The Club World Cup offers a chance to test themselves against some of the best teams in the world.
