Rishabh Pant's explosive batting style has once again drawn comparisons to the legendary Australian wicketkeeper-batsman, Adam Gilchrist. Following Pant's remarkable performance in the recent Test match against England at Headingley, Leeds, former India coach Greg Chappell has showered the young Indian with massive praise, drawing parallels between his game-changing impact and Gilchrist's.

Pant etched his name in the record books by becoming only the second wicketkeeper after Zimbabwe's Andy Flower to score a century in each innings of a Test match. His audacious strokeplay and fearless approach captivated fans and kept the English bowlers on their toes throughout the match, even though India fell short of victory.

Chappell, speaking at the launch of a smart bat technology device, noted that Pant's aggressive approach and ability to score quickly reminded him of Gilchrist. He emphasized the significant difference a wicketkeeper who can bat at that level can make to a team. "When I first saw him, he reminded me of Adam Gilchrist... the (big) difference it can make to a team when a wicketkeeper can bat at that level and to score runs quickly," Chappell said. He further added, "What an exciting cricketer! What a player to have on your team!".

Pant's batting is not just about scoring runs; it's about reinventing the game, according to Chappell. He highlighted Pant's innovative shot selection and ability to play shots that were previously considered impossible. "Some of the shots Rishabh played aren't in the MCC playing manual. He is really reinventing the game," Chappell stated. He also pointed out Pant's unpredictability, noting that one never knows what to expect from him, whether it's jumping down the wicket to fast bowlers or playing the falling ramp shot. This unpredictability keeps the opposition on their toes and makes him a match-winner.

AB de Villiers, the legendary South African batter, also weighed in on Pant's high-risk batting style. While acknowledging that Pant's approach can be frustrating at times, De Villiers admitted that it's precisely what defines his game and contributes to his success. De Villiers noted that he could count nearly 20 moments where Pant could have been dismissed for under 30 in both innings, but he survived and ultimately thrived.

Aakash Chopra has also voiced his support for Pant's aggressive batting style, emphasizing that everyone sees the game differently. Chopra suggested that Pant's style is about upsetting the bowler and controlling the game through aggressive hitting.

Pant's recent twin centuries have propelled him to a career-best seventh position in the ICC Test rankings for batters. His ability to form crucial partnerships, as seen in the Headingley Test where he added 209 runs with Shubman Gill in the first innings, further highlights his value to the team.

While Pant's individual brilliance has often shone through, converting these moments into consistent victories remains a challenge. Despite his heroics at Headingley, India suffered a loss, underscoring the need for greater team support to complement Pant's efforts. Nevertheless, his fearless approach and aggressive style are exactly what India needs, and the team must build around him to achieve consistent success, especially in overseas conditions. As Chappell noted, Pant's ability to score runs quickly gives the team time to win matches, making him an invaluable asset.
