The Indian Golf Union (IGU) has received a significant boost with the Sports Ministry giving the green light for the inaugural edition of the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL). The league is scheduled to take place in January 2026, marking a significant step towards popularizing golf in India.

The IGPL will be organized in partnership with Bharat Golf Private Limited. The approval from the Sports Ministry followed a meeting between IGU Director Major General (Retd) Bibhuti Bhushan, members of the IGPL Board, and Women's Golf Association of India (WGAI) secretary general Champika Sayal, with Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Minister of Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

Major General (Retd) Bibhuti Bhushan expressed his enthusiasm, stating, "I can say with utmost pleasure that the Sports Ministry has given us the nod to organise the first-ever Indian Golf Premier League, which aims at popularising the sport in Bharat. Through IGPL we will scout and nurture world-class golf talent who will proudly represent Bharat on the global stage."

The IGPL is envisioned as a city-based franchise league, uniquely featuring both amateur and professional golfers in a team format. This structure is designed to create a vibrant and competitive environment, fostering the growth of golf at all levels. The league aims to provide international standard training to over one million students within the next three years.

The Sports Ministry's support extends beyond mere approval, with a commitment to fostering a thriving league culture in India. This includes potential integration of golf into programs like the Khelo India Games and incorporating golf into school curriculums. The IGU has been actively working to expand its reach, including initiatives in the North-East, to further grow the game.

This backing from the Sports Ministry is a significant stride for the IGU, which has been actively promoting golf through various development programs. The IGU has also been focusing on "Training the Trainers" to improve the quality of golf coaching in the country. The organization has been receiving support and funding from the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs.

The IGU has also formed National Squads, which are regularly updated based on player performances, to select teams for various events. The IGU also receives government support to send teams abroad for exposure.
