The sting of the 2023 ODI World Cup final loss to Australia lingered long in the Indian dressing room, fueling a burning desire for revenge. As the 2024 T20 World Cup approached, the opportunity to settle the score presented itself in the Super 8s stage. India's captain, Rohit Sharma, recently revealed the mindset and conversations within the team leading up to their crucial match against the Aussies.

Speaking on Star Sports' show "Champions Wali Feeling Phir Se," Rohit disclosed that the loss on November 19, 2023, in Ahmedabad, was a significant motivator. "Australia had ruined our and the whole country's November 19 in the ODI WC Final, so we should also give them a gift," Rohit stated, recounting the sentiment shared amongst the players. The "gift," of course, was to knock Australia out of the T20 World Cup.

India entered the Super 8s encounter with a steely resolve. Australia, on the other hand, were in a precarious position, having suffered a defeat against Afghanistan. A loss to India would seal their fate, sending them packing from the tournament. The Indian team was well aware of this scenario, and it added extra fuel to their fire. Rohit emphasized, "We had it in our minds that if we win this match, Australia will be out of this T20 World Cup."

The match itself was a thrilling affair. Rohit Sharma led from the front, smashing a brilliant 92 to propel India to a formidable total. The bowlers then did their job, restricting Australia and securing a 24-run victory. India not only advanced to the semi-finals but also accomplished their mission of eliminating the defending ODI World Champions.

While Rohit admitted that the desire for revenge was present in the back of their minds, he clarified that it didn't cloud their focus during the game. "Gussa sabke andar rehta hai. Woh cheez back of the mind rehti hai," he said. However, when he was batting, his sole focus was on contributing to the team's total, not on eliminating Australia from the tournament. He emphasized that the dressing room banter was all in good fun.

Ultimately, India went on to win the T20 World Cup 2024, defeating South Africa in the final and ending their 11-year wait for an ICC title. The victory against Australia served as a significant catalyst, boosting their momentum and confidence. Rohit Sharma's leadership and the team's collective determination played a crucial role in their success. The "return gift" was delivered, and India had their revenge.
