With the 2024-25 season officially in the rearview mirror, the Montreal Canadiens are setting their sights on the upcoming offseason, a period laden with opportunities to bolster their roster and address key needs. General Manager Kent Hughes faces a crucial summer, with decisions to make regarding both unrestricted and restricted free agents. Among the priorities will be identifying potential additions to the defensive corps, and the free agent market could offer some intriguing options. Here are four free-agent defensemen the Canadiens should consider:

1. Ryan Lindgren

Ryan Lindgren is a left-handed defenseman who split his 2024-25 season between the New York Rangers and the Colorado Avalanche. At 27 years old, Lindgren brings a physical and rugged style of play that could add a new dimension to the Canadiens' blue line. In 72 games, he recorded 22 points, 62 shots on goal, 128 blocked shots, and 80 hits, while averaging 19:42 of ice time per game. Lindgren's defensive capabilities and willingness to engage physically make him a valuable asset. His potential addition could provide a stabilizing presence and mentor younger players.

2. Kashawn Aitcheson

Kashawn Aitcheson is a hard-hitting defenseman who is likely to interest the Habs due to his truculent approach to the game. Fans of old school defensemen would love to have Aitcheson in the fold due to his affinity for obliterating opposing forwards who forget to keep their heads up. He also does pretty well when it comes to generating production, finishing seventh in OHL scoring among defensemen with 26 goals and 33 assists in 64 games.

3. Cameron Reid

Cameron Reid is a defenseman who is the last draft-eligible prospect to be named by at least two outlets. His elite skating causes headaches for opponents when he's dancing the blue line in the offensive zone, while also opening up passing lanes in prime scoring areas for his teammates. With 14 goals and 40 assists in 67 games, the Rangers' alternate captain established himself as one of the most interesting puck-moving defensemen available. He's also quite adept at puck retrieval, which happens to be another area of weakness for the Canadiens.

4. Noah Dobson

Noah Dobson's situation is particular, as he'll be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2025-26 season, unless he signs a long-term pact. It remains to be seen if the Isles' new management wants to move Dobson, but the offer sheet remains an option if they don't.
