Aitana Bonmati, the Barcelona and Spain midfielder, has been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment for viral meningitis. The news comes just days before the start of the UEFA Women's EURO 2025, casting doubt on her participation in the tournament.

The Spanish football federation (RFEF) released a statement confirming Bonmati's release from the hospital. The statement indicated that she would be joining the Spanish national team's training camp in the coming days. Bonmati had been hospitalized for several days after being diagnosed with viral meningitis.

Bonmati's hospitalization followed a period of concern after she missed training due to a persistent and unexplained fever. She was also absent from Spain's 3-1 friendly victory over Japan.

Viral meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. According to the NHS, the illness can be serious if left untreated and, in extreme cases, can cause sepsis. The typical recovery period for viral meningitis is between seven to ten days.

Despite being discharged from the hospital, Bonmati's participation in the Euro 2025 remains uncertain. Her return to the squad will depend on her progress and a final decision by the RFEF.

Aitana Bonmati, a two-time Ballon d'Or winner, was a key player in Spain's World Cup victory in 2023. Her absence would be a significant blow to the Spanish team as they prepare for their Euro 2025 campaign. Spain is set to begin their Euro 2025 campaign against Portugal in Berne on July 3rd.

The rest of the Spain squad is scheduled to travel to Switzerland. The RFEF and the Spanish national team will continue to monitor Bonmati's condition closely to determine her availability for the upcoming tournament.
