The United States Men's National Team (USMNT) faced Costa Rica in a thrilling match at the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup, ultimately advancing to the semifinals after a penalty shootout. The game was filled with dramatic moments, including a notable shot by Costa Rica's Alonso Martinez that struck the post.

Costa Rica initially took the lead in the 12th minute when Francisco Calvo converted a penalty kick after Max Arfsten fouled Kenneth Vargas. The USMNT had an opportunity to equalize in the 37th minute when Malik Tillman earned a penalty, but his shot hit the left post. Arfsten attempted to score on the rebound, but Costa Rica's goalkeeper, Keylor Navas, made the save.

The USMNT finally found the net in the 43rd minute when Diego Luna's shot deflected off Costa Rican defender Alexis Gamboa, tying the score at 1-1. Early in the second half, Arfsten made amends for conceding the penalty by scoring in the 47th minute, giving the U.S. a 2-1 lead.

Costa Rica responded in the 71st minute when Alonso Martinez scored, leveling the score at 2-2. The goal came after USMNT goalkeeper Matt Freese, Martinez's teammate on New York City FC, saved a shot by Carlos Mora, with Martinez converting the rebound. In the 81st minute, Tillman hit the crossbar, and later in the match, Martinez's shot hit the left post.

With the score tied after 90 minutes, the match went straight to a penalty shootout. The USMNT prevailed 4-3 in the shootout, with Freese making three saves, including a save against Andy Rojas in the sixth round. Damion Downs then scored the winning penalty for the United States.

The USMNT will now face Guatemala in the semifinals in St. Louis. Guatemala advanced after defeating Canada 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. The winner of the USMNT-Guatemala match will then play either Mexico or Honduras in the final on July 6 in Houston.
