The USMNT had an opportunity to equalize in the 37th minute when Malik Tillman earned a penalty, but his shot hit the left post. Arfsten attempted to score on the rebound, but Costa Rica's goalkeeper, Keylor Navas, made the save.

The USMNT finally found the net in the 43rd minute when Diego Luna's shot deflected off Costa Rican defender Alexis Gamboa, tying the score at 1-1. Early in the second half, Arfsten made amends for conceding the penalty by scoring in the 47th minute, giving the U.S. a 2-1 lead.

Costa Rica responded in the 71st minute when Alonso Martinez scored, leveling the score at 2-2. The USMNT will now face Guatemala in the semifinals in St. Louis. Guatemala advanced after defeating Canada 6-5 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. The winner of the USMNT-Guatemala match will then play either Mexico or Honduras in the final on July 6 in Houston.
