Amidst escalating tensions and heightened security concerns, the participation of the Pakistan men's hockey team in the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, scheduled to be held in Rajgir, India, remains uncertain. A high-ranking official from Hockey India has indicated that the federation is likely to adhere to the government's stance, suggesting that Pakistan may not be permitted to participate in the tournament.

The Men's Asia Cup 2025, a crucial qualifying event for the 2026 FIH Men's Hockey World Cup in Belgium and the Netherlands, is slated to take place from August 29 to September 9 at the Rajgir Hockey Stadium. The winner of the Asia Cup will secure a coveted spot in the World Cup. However, recent events have cast a shadow over Pakistan's potential involvement.

Following a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that resulted in the loss of 26 lives, there have been growing calls for Pakistan's exclusion from the tournament. These calls have prompted Hockey India to consult with the government on the matter, with the final decision hinging on governmental directives.

"We are in contact with the government, and we will follow whatever instructions it provides. As for the current situation, I don't think the Pakistan team will be allowed to participate," a Hockey India official told IANS. This statement underscores the gravity of the situation and the likelihood that political and security considerations will outweigh sporting factors.

Bholanath Singh, the secretary general of Hockey India, has emphasized that the nation's interests take precedence in this matter. "The country comes first for us. Asia Cup is happening in India, and whatever the government advises us, we will abide by that," Singh stated. He further added, "Whatever the government decides we will abide by it". This stance reflects Hockey India's commitment to aligning with the government's foreign policy and security assessments.

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) had earlier requested the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) to guarantee visas for their contingent to participate in the Asia Cup. However, given the prevailing circumstances, the issuance of these visas appears increasingly unlikely.

Adding another layer of complexity, India is also set to host the FIH Hockey Men's Junior World Cup 2025 in Chennai and Madurai from November 28 to December 10. Pakistan was drawn alongside India in the expanded 24-team tournament. The uncertainty surrounding Pakistan's participation in the Asia Cup has raised concerns about their involvement in the Junior World Cup as well.

Pakistan's last visit to India for a hockey event was in 2023, when Chennai hosted the Asian Champions Trophy. The Indian team, led by Harmanpreet Singh, emerged victorious, defeating Malaysia in the final.
