Aitana Bonmati, the Barcelona midfielder and Ballon d'Or winner, has rejoined the Spain Euro 2025 squad in Switzerland after receiving treatment for viral meningitis. The 27-year-old was hospitalized in Madrid last Friday after missing training, which caused her to miss Spain's 3-1 friendly victory over Japan. Bonmati was discharged from the hospital on Sunday after undergoing treatment.

The Spanish Football Federation shared photos on social media showing Bonmati arriving at the team hotel in Switzerland on Monday night. A post on X read: “And when we thought the day had given its all… @AitanaBonmati trains again with @sefutbolfem in Switzerland. What a joy to have you back, Aita!”. Bonmati was seen hugging her teammates and appeared to be in good spirits.

Bonmati's return is a significant boost for the reigning World Cup champions as they prepare for their Euro 2025 campaign. She has scored 30 goals in 78 appearances for her country. However, it is uncertain when she will be available to play.

Spain will begin their Euro 2025 campaign against Portugal in Bern on Thursday. Following that, they will face Belgium in Thun on Monday before concluding the group stage against Italy back in Bern.

According to Spanish reports, Bonmati is unlikely to be ready for the Euro 2025 opener against Portugal. Viral meningitis is generally less severe than bacterial meningitis, and most cases improve on their own. However, the NHS indicates that this usually takes seven to ten days. Bonmati was hospitalized just six days before Spain's match against Portugal, making it unlikely that she will be ready for the game. Spain hopes to have her back for their second group game against Belgium on July 7th. Their final Group B game is against Italy on July 11th.
