As NHL free agency rapidly approaches, several teams are strategizing their next moves. Rasmus Andersson of the Calgary Flames is at the center of trade discussions, while the Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly considering alternative plans if they cannot re-sign key players.

Andersson's Preferred Destination: Vegas

Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson is generating significant interest in the trade market. The Flames are open to a sign-and-trade deal, but Andersson seems to have a clear preference: the Vegas Golden Knights. According to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, Andersson is primarily interested in signing an extension with Vegas, and is hesitant to negotiate with other teams such as the Ottawa Senators, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Los Angeles Kings.

Andersson is under contract through the 2025-26 season, with a $4.55 million cap hit and a modified no-trade clause. While this gives him some control over his destination, it also complicates matters for the Flames, who would likely receive a better return if Andersson agrees to a long-term extension as part of the trade.

However, the Golden Knights have limited salary cap space and are evaluating what they can offer. Discussions have occurred between Vegas and Calgary, but a deal has not yet been reached, and the Flames are not completely satisfied with Vegas's current offer.

Maple Leafs' "Plan B"

The Toronto Maple Leafs face uncertainty as they approach free agency. With negotiations ongoing with key players like Mitch Marner and John Tavares, the team is considering alternative scenarios.

TSN's Chris Johnston suggested that the Maple Leafs might explore trading Marner's rights if an extension isn't agreed upon. The team may also look at free-agent options such as Chris Kreider if Marner departs. Recent reports also indicate that the Golden Knights acquired Jeremy Lauzon and Colton Sissons from the Nashville Predators in exchange for Nicolas Hague and a 2027 third-round pick. Hague was rumored to be part of a potential sign-and-trade deal to bring Mitch Marner to Vegas.

Regarding Tavares, if an agreement cannot be reached, the Leafs may consider signing Mikael Granlund. However, Johnston noted that Granlund would likely not be viewed as an improvement. Pierre LeBrun believes that a four-year deal at $5 million or more could be the final outcome between the Leafs and Tavares.

The Maple Leafs have successfully signed Matthew Knies to a six-year, $46.5 million extension and are trying to re-sign Steven Lorentz.

Other NHL Rumors

Several other rumors are circulating as free agency nears. The Boston Bruins are reportedly seeking to add a top-four defenseman. The Edmonton Oilers are trying to extend Evan Bouchard's contract and are interested in re-signing Corey Perry. The Los Angeles Kings have re-signed Andrei Kuzmenko to a one-year contract.
