As the 2025 Gold Cup semifinals approach, Mexico is positioned as a slight favorite over the United States to win the title. The two North American powerhouses have consistently been the top contenders in the tournament, and this year is no different.

Mexico, with a record nine Gold Cup titles, aims to extend their dominance in the region. Led by key players such as Edson Álvarez and Santiago Giménez, "El Tri" is considered to be close to full strength and eager to claim their tenth Gold Cup trophy. Recently, Mexico defeated Saudi Arabia 2-0 in the quarterfinals. Historically, Mexico has been the most successful team in CONCACAF, with 14 continental titles. Javier Aguirre, in his third spell as Mexico's head coach, will be looking to guide the team to victory. Mexico's roster includes experienced players such as Jorge Sánchez, Jesús Orozco, and César Montes in defense, as well as Luis Chávez and Orbelín Pineda in midfield. In attack, Raúl Jiménez and Julián Quiñones provide further options. Mexico will face Honduras in the Semifinals.

The United States, while potentially not at full strength, remains a strong contender. The USMNT has a blend of veteran leadership and emerging talent. Key players for the United States include Malik Tillman, who has been a standout performer in the tournament, and other goalscorers like Patrick Agyemang. The United States advanced to the semifinals after a 4-3 penalty shootout victory over Costa Rica, following a 2-2 draw. The USMNT will face Guatemala in the Semifinals. The USMNT's roster for the 2025 Gold Cup features a mix of experienced players and uncapped talents. Mauricio Pochettino has selected a 26-player roster that includes goalkeepers Chris Brady and Matt Freese, defenders Alex Freeman and Nathan Harriel, midfielders Sebastian Berhalter and Quinn Sullivan, and forward Damion Downs.

Canada is also considered a potential dark horse in the tournament. Despite the absence of Alphonso Davies due to injury, the Canadian team, coached by Jesse Marsch, possesses a youthful core led by Jonathan David. However, Canada was eliminated by Guatemala in the Quarterfinals, losing 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

The semifinals are scheduled for Wednesday, July 2nd, with Mexico facing Honduras at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA, and the United States playing against Guatemala at Energizer Park in St. Louis, MO. The winners of these matches will advance to the final, which will be held on Sunday, July 6th, at NRG Stadium in Houston, TX.

The 2025 Gold Cup is the final set of competitive matches before the three host nations, USA, Mexico, and Canada, host the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
