Katariina Kosola's second-half goal secured a 1-0 victory for Finland against Iceland in the opening match of the UEFA Women's Euro 2025, marking Finland's first win at the finals since 2009. The match, played in Thun, Switzerland, saw Finland capitalize on Iceland being reduced to 10 players after Hildur Antonsdottir's red card.

Kosola's decisive strike came in the 70th minute when she cut in from the left flank and curled a right-footed shot into the net. This was Kosola's fourth clear shooting chance of the game, with previous attempts including a diving save forced from Iceland's goalkeeper Cecilía Rúnarsdóttir and two shots that narrowly missed the crossbar in the first half.

The red card was shown to Antonsdottir 12 minutes before Kosola's goal, giving Finland a significant advantage. Finland were able to exploit the numerical advantage and Kosola made sure to take the chance.

Despite the loss, Iceland had their opportunities, with eight shots on goal compared to Finland's three. However, they couldn't find a way past Finland's defense and goalkeeper.

The match also saw a couple of other notable moments. Finland's Emmi Alanen received a yellow card early in the game. Iceland made a half-time substitution, with Heidarsdottir replacing Viggosdottir, who was unable to continue. There was also a positional change for Iceland, with Jonsdottir moving to center-forward and Jensen switching to the left.

With this win, Finland faces Norway next in Sion on Sunday. Iceland, who have only one win in 14 Euros matches, will face Switzerland in Bern.
