The Edmonton Oilers have been busy in the early stages of free agency, making moves to bolster their roster for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Several key storylines are developing, including the additions of Andrew Mangiapane and Curtis Lazar, potential interest in prospect Isaac Howard, and the looming contract extension for Connor McDavid.

Mangiapane Inks Two-Year Deal

The Oilers have signed winger Andrew Mangiapane to a two-year contract with an average annual value of $3.6 million. The 29-year-old Mangiapane is coming off a season with the Washington Capitals where he recorded 14 goals and 14 assists in 81 games. Mangiapane, a former Calgary Flame, is expected to bring a blend of skill and grit to the Oilers' top-nine forward group and is confident he can fit in well with either Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl. After trading away Viktor Arvidsson and Evander Kane to create cap space, and re-signing Evan Bouchard and Trent Frederic, the Oilers are near the salary cap.

Lazar Joins Oilers on a One-Year Contract

The Oilers have also added forward Curtis Lazar on a one-year deal worth $775,000. The 30-year-old Lazar, who played junior hockey with the WHL's Edmonton Oil Kings, is returning to familiar territory. Lazar spent last season with the New Jersey Devils, where he had two goals and three assists in 48 games. He is expected to add depth and experience to the Oilers' fourth line. In 572 NHL games, Lazar has 47 goals and 78 assists.

Interest in Isaac Howard

The Oilers have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring prospect Isaac Howard from the Tampa Bay Lightning. Howard, a 2022 first-round pick, is unlikely to sign with the Lightning, making him a potential trade target. The Michigan State University forward, who had 26 goals and 26 assists in 37 NCAA games, won the Hobey Baker Award as the top NCAA player. He is a skilled offensive player with limitations in his defensive game. It was reported that the Oilers offered a late first-round pick for Howard's rights, but the Lightning declined.

McDavid Extension a Priority

With Connor McDavid eligible to sign a contract extension, the Oilers have made it clear that re-signing their captain is their top priority. McDavid is entering the final year of his eight-year, $100 million contract. General Manager Stan Bowman stated the team is ready to begin negotiations whenever McDavid is ready. McDavid has led the Oilers to the Stanley Cup Final for the past two seasons and recently stated he will take time to weigh his options, consulting with his family and agent. Bowman said he is respecting McDavid's timeline, but there is no question McDavid is a pivotal player. In 2024-25, McDavid had 100 points (26 goals, 74 assists) in 67 games.
